Head of Parliamentary Engagement - International Development

We are hiring a Head of Parliamentary Engagement to build and run our parliamentary work and deliver sustained engagement in Westminster. You will own our relationships across both Houses, building an organised parliamentary base and making sure our analysis reaches the right people. This is a role for an energetic organiser who can get people into rooms and maintain a complex network.

Key responsibilities
• Build and manage a network of supportive MPs, Peers and staffers.
• Coordinate parliamentary activity: letters, questions, debates and meetings.
• Set up and run parliamentary groups, including possible APPG secretariat work.
• Organise briefings and meetings with parliamentarians, Ministers, Special Advisers and officials; liaise between them and our experts.
• Plan and deliver parliamentary events - roundtables, dinners, receptions, panels - with faith groups, NGOs, sector partners, plus activity at party conference.
• Monitor parliamentary business; identify opportunities to intervene.
• Distribute briefings to parliamentarians and staff, timed to the parliamentary calendar; keep accurate records.

Flexibility
You will at times take on tasks beyond your core brief, occasionally work outside office hours, and travel to events outside London such as party conference. Time off compensates for out-of-hours work.

Person specification

Essential
• Experience in or with Parliament: for an MP or Peer, in public affairs, an APPG or campaign secretariat, or an advocacy organisation.
• Track record of building productive relationships with parliamentarians and staff.
• Strong understanding of the Labour Party, its people, culture and internal politics. We work cross-party, but our centre of gravity is Labour.
• Excellent organisational skills; the ability to run several strands of work to the parliamentary timetable.
• Clear, concise writing for correspondence and briefings.
• Discretion; our work depends on trust.
• Self-starting and comfortable with autonomy in a small team.
• The right to work in the UK.
• Sympathy with the aims and values of the Labour Party and trade union movement.

Desirable
• Knowledge of international development, climate and the global picture.
• Experience organising events in Parliament.
• Experience of campaign organising: political, union, civil society.
