RC Engineer

Location: North East of England

Key Responsibilities:

Design and Oversight: Lead the design and planning phases of underground tunnel construction projects, focusing on technical aspects such as soil and rock mechanics, structural designs, and appropriate construction methods. Ensure projects are safely completed within budget and specifications, often for major transportation and infrastructure initiatives.

Construction Management:

• Direct the construction process, selecting suitable excavation techniques such as Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) or Sequential Excavation Method (SEM).
• Monitor ongoing construction to maintain safety and compliance with regulatory standards.
• Facilitate coordination among contractors and various engineering disciplines. Technical Expertise:
• Apply in-depth knowledge of ground mechanics, structural engineering, and specialized tunnel construction techniques.
• Assess project risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
• Generate and review design reports, technical specifications, and contractual documents. Project Planning and Budgeting:
• Create and manage project timelines and financial estimates.
• Ensure projects remain within budget and are cost-effective. Collaboration and Communication:
• Engage with clients and engineering teams, ensuring clear communication.
• Effectively present technical information and project statuses to all relevant parties. Design and Analysis:
• Perform geotechnical evaluations to determine soil and rock characteristics.
• Design comprehensive tunnel structures, including linings, excavation supports, and ventilation systems, using specialised software for modelling and analysis. Reinforcement Specialisation:
• Be fully conversant with rebar schedules and the construction of RC frames, crucial for ensuring the structural integrity and compliance of our projects.

Specialisation Opportunities:

• Tunnel Ventilation Engineer: Focus on the design and operation of tunnel ventilation systems.
• Tunnel Lining Engineer: Specialize in the engineering and installation of tunnel linings.
• TBM Engineer: Master the functionalities and maintenance of Tunnel Boring Machines.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Structural, or Mechanical preferred).
• Mandatory SMSTS certification.
• Preferred IOSH Managing Safely in Construction.
• Valid CSCS Card.
• At least 3 years' experience in underground environments, particularly with Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machines.
• Documented experience as a Person in Charge (PIC) in significant projects.
