Our Technical Advisory practice are looking for an experienced Senior Consultant to join the team.
Our Energy and Resources team works across the energy value chain and supports many of the world’s leading energy companies, infrastructure investors, private-equity funds, lenders, developers, network owners and government organisations. You will have the opportunity to work on transactions and projects across the UK, Europe and internationally. Our Market and Transactions unit is looking for an experienced Senior Consultant or Manager to join our Technical Advisory capability, working at the heart of the energy transition and supporting investors, developers, lenders, utilities and public-sector organisations on grid connection, grid compliance and electrical network decisions. Our Technical Advisory team combines engineering, transaction advisory and technical due diligence experience to help clients understand the connection, compliance, curtailment and network risks that determine the cost, programme and value of energy assets. You will work closely with Baringa’s market, commercial, market access and transaction advice teams, while bringing an independent and engineering-led perspective to investment and development decisions.
What you will be doing
The core of the role is applying a high voltage power systems background to the grid and electrical workstreams of buy-side, sell-side and lender technical due diligence, and to connection and network advice, across generation, storage, interconnector, network and large demand assets. You will typically:
- Support infrastructure investors, lenders, developers, utilities and public-sector clients on grid connection, compliance and electrical network questions, bringing a power systems perspective to investment and development decisions.
- Review connection applications, offers, agreements and ICP or IDNO arrangements, and the delivery programme behind them, including reinforcement dependencies, outage requirements, network operator obligations and energisation milestones, and what delay would mean for commercial operation.
- Assess grid code and connection compliance requirements such as reactive power and voltage control, frequency response, fault ride-through and power quality, and how compliance will be demonstrated through to energisation.
- Review power system studies prepared by developers, contractors and third parties, including load flow, fault level, voltage step change and harmonics, and whether the assumptions and results are reasonable.
- Assess network constraints and curtailment assumptions, including export limitation and flexible or non-firm connection arrangements, and what they mean for output and revenue.
- Review transmission and distribution infrastructure, including substations, switchgear, transformers, cables, overhead lines, protection and control systems and electrical balance of plant, and comment on design, condition and capacity headroom.
- Benchmark electrical capital and operating costs, connection charges, reinforcement liabilities and replacement assumptions, and whether they are reflected in the business plan.
- Turn complex and often incomplete technical information into clear, practical findings and recommendations for engineering and investment audiences through reports, risk registers and presentations, and take part in client discussions, technical Q&A sessions, management meetings and site
Your skills and experience
Essential experience
- You will typically have 5 to 8 years of relevant professional experience, although we welcome candidates outside this range with particularly relevant experience.
- You will have a strong foundation in electrical or power systems engineering, supported by a relevant degree, equivalent qualification or substantial practical experience.
- You will have demonstrable experience undertaking technical due diligence, Lender’s Technical Advisor assignments or comparable investor-facing technical assessments of power and grid infrastructure. This will include assessing capital and operating expenditure assumptions, identifying material technical and investment risks, and taking ownership of substantive deliverables such as technical report sections, risk registers or red flag presentations.
- You will have experience of grid connection processes, including connection strategies, applications, offers and agreements, alongside an understanding of grid code requirements and technical compliance processes for generation, storage or large demand projects.
- You will have hands-on experience independently undertaking power system studies, including relevant network modelling and analysis, using industry-standard software such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSS®E, PSCAD or IPSA.
- You will have experience taking responsibility for technical workstreams, coordinating specialist inputs, engaging directly with clients and supporting junior colleagues, appropriate to your level of experience.
- Chartered Engineer status, or demonstrable progress towards chartership, would be desirable but is not essential.
Desirable experience
- Experience of network constraints and curtailment, including constraint drivers, export limitation, and flexible or non-firm connection arrangements, and their consequences for asset output.
- Experience of the GB connection and compliance regime, including engagement with the national system operator, transmission owners and network operators, and familiarity with the operational notification stage gate process, would be highly relevant.
- Experience of connection and compliance regimes in other European markets, or of interconnector, HVDC or offshore transmission projects, would be valuable.
- Experience of connection charging, reinforcement liabilities, securities, network charges, or the regulatory framework governing connections and network investment would be useful.
- Experience with network owners or operators, including asset condition assessment, capacity headroom, network performance and investment planning, would be relevant.
- Experience using operational or network datasets, automation or AI-enabled tools to support technical assessment and document review would be beneficial, provided outputs remain transparent, auditable and subject to professional judgement. What a career at Baringa will give you
