Do you have the practical skills, patience, and creativity to inspire young people as they prepare for working life?
Our Milton Keynes centre, opened in September 2025, is based in Duckworth Court, tucked away in a large, characterful building that was once a lighting showroom. It’s an open, practical space designed to support hands-on learning — and it’s intentionally still evolving.
Rather than arriving at a finished, polished environment, learners help to shape and develop the centre itself, particularly those on construction pathways. Decorating, adapting spaces, fixing, building, and improving the environment all form part of the learning experience. This approach gives practical skills real purpose and creates a sense of ownership — something many of our young people have rarely experienced in education.
At New Meaning Training (NMT), we work with young people for whom the transition to adulthood can feel overwhelming. Many face additional barriers such as autism, ADHD, anxiety, attachment difficulties, or social and emotional challenges, which can affect confidence, engagement, and self-regulation. Our role is to provide structure, encouragement, and meaningful hands-on learning so they can begin to take control of their future.
We are looking for a Construction Multiskills Tutor who can engage and motivate learners through kinaesthetic, learning-by-doing approaches. Construction is a powerful tool for our young people — it builds teamwork, problem-solving, resilience, and pride through visible progress and tangible outcomes.
You’ll lead practical sessions across areas such as carpentry, tiling and decorating while also embedding employability skills, positive behaviour, and confidence-building throughout the day. Managing behaviour calmly and positively is a key part of the role, and you’ll work closely with a supportive, reflective team who share a commitment to doing things differently.
Ideally, you’ll bring experience from the construction industry or from training others in practical skills. However, we also welcome applicants who haven’t taught before but have the right mindset, patience, and desire to pass on their skills. If you’re looking for a meaningful career change, we’ll provide the training and support you need to succeed as a tutor.
This is not a conventional teaching role — and our Milton Keynes centre is not a conventional setting. It reflects what learning really looks like for many young people: work in progress, with visible growth along the way.
If you have the resilience, empathy, and practical know-how to help young people build skills, confidence, and a positive future, we’d love to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
Plan and deliver engaging, hands-on sessions in areas such as carpentry, decorating, tiling, and basic plumbing.
Support learners both 1:1 and in small groups, adapting sessions to suit different confidence and ability levels.
Work collaboratively with the High Wycombe team to align resources, schemes of work, and assessment approaches.
Encourage attendance, routine, and accountability, helping learners to build consistency and confidence.
Support the development of functional Maths and English skills within practical, real-world contexts.
Use a trauma-informed, relational approach to behaviour management, helping learners feel safe, respected, and understood.
Keep accurate records of progress, engagement, and outcomes to inform learner reviews and quality assurance.
Reflect on your own practice and contribute to team development and cross-centre collaboration.
Liaise with support services, parents/carers, and external agencies to promote learner success and wellbeing.
About us
New Meaning Training (NMT) offers education with a difference. We are an alternative education provider dedicated to helping young people aged 15-25 discover their strengths and develop the confidence and skills to earn their own living.
For the 2025-2026 academic year, just over 300 young people from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, and Berkshire will join one of our programmes. Many of these students are referred by secondary schools, pupil referral units, and Special Education Needs settings.
Our journey began in 2015 with the opening of our first centre in High Wycombe, originally known as “Toolshed.” Ten years on, NMT continues to grow, with two new centres that opened for the 2025-2026 academic year.
New Meaning Training delivers a broad offer across several counties, and in Buckinghamshire we operate three centres—High Wycombe, Aylesbury and Milton Keynes—that provide flexible pathways for young people to build confidence, develop skills and move toward positive destinations. Across these centres, learners can access a varied mix of SETPD “Introduction to…” courses, including Catering, Computing, Community Care, Motor Mechanics, Creative Art & Design and Hair & Beauty, alongside our established Construction Multiskills programme, Boost Workskills, and Achieve Lifeskills. We also offer Transition Support; an outreach programme designed for young people who need time and tailored support before reengaging with a learning environment. All programmes incorporate Functional Skills in Maths and English, supported by tutorials that build personal growth, wellbeing and employability. Each Buckinghamshire centre has its own character: High Wycombe will expand into a new dedicated learning space on Baker Street from September 2026; Aylesbury occupies the much loved former Healthy Living Centre; and Milton Keynes offers a distinctive practical setting in its converted lighting shop. Together, these centres form a key part of our wider regional provision.
NMT tailors its programmes to meet the needs of its learners, considering Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. We comprehensively apply the principles of a Loving Care Approach (Trauma Informed Practice) to ensure all young people receive the support they need to thrive.
