Ready to play your part?

At AWE, it's not just a job, it's far more than that. Our shared purpose is to help keep the nation safe. Could this role be the opportunity for you to play your part?

AWE is looking for a Calibration Instrument Technician to join our dynamic team. As part of AWE's Nucleonic Instrumentation Service (NIS) Team, you'll play a pivotal role as one of the team's Calibrators which underpins the core function of capability delivery. You will enjoy a flexible and wide-ranging role that will include core tasks of instrument calibration, testing and verification of radiation detection and monitoring equipment (RDME), as well as supporting wider functions within the team.

The NIS capability provides through-life support for the MOD's suite of RDME. This is delivered via 3 core functions: Logistics, Calibration & Repair, operating three dose-rate calibration rooms, a contamination calibration lab and a dynamic test facility, processing approximately 8,000 instruments through the facility every year. The facility is UKAS ISO/IEC 17025 accredited. The team also provides expert technical advice and evaluation, supports high profile projects, and responds to high priority demands to meet the needs of defence and industry.

Who are we looking for?

We do need you to have the following:
  • NVQ/BTEC or equivalent in electrical, electronic, instrumentation engineering or similar technical field.
  • Hold a level of calibration competence or have the aptitude and skills to learn how to calibrate, test, and verify electronic instruments using approved procedures and test equipment.
  • Have good attention to detail and ability to closely follow work instructions / publications, in order to deliver accurate and traceable calibration records.
  • Experience of safe working practices, operating electronic equipment safely within a quality-controlled environment.
  • Ability to conduct routine equipment checks and basic testing. (Functionality checks and using defined checklists)
While this isn't a checklist, we'd love to hear from you if you have experience in any of the following areas:
  • Working in an ISO 17025 accredited lab environment, regulated industry, or environment requiring strict procedural compliance.
  • Experience calibrating or maintaining radiation protection monitoring equipment or dose rate instruments.
  • Working in a customer facing team that delivers technically complex services in an area with stringent technical requirements.
  • Experience working with radiological equipment, check sources and understanding of radiological safety procedures and associated documentation.
You'll need to have the ability to work calmly and constructively in a priority changing environment and be able to manage your own workload. You will also have initiative, enthusiasm, a flexible approach, and ability to work to tight deadlines.

Work hard, be rewarded:

We ask a lot and set the bar high because our work truly matters. In return we offer balance, with award winning benefits including:
  • 270 hours of annual leave.
  • Market leading contributory pension scheme (we will pay between 9% and 13% of your pensionable pay depending on your contributions).
  • Family friendly policies: Maternity Leave - 39 Weeks Full Pay and Paternity Leave - 4 Weeks Full Pay.
  • Opportunities for Professional Career Development including funding for annual membership of a relevant professional body.
  • Employee Assistance Programme and Occupational Health Services.
  • Life Assurance (4 x annual salary).
  • Discounts - access to savings on a wide range of everyday spending.
  • Special Leave Policy including paid time off for volunteering, public service (including reserve forces) and caring.
The 'Working at AWE' page on our website is where you can find full details in the 'AWE Benefits Guide'.

Due to the classified nature of the work involved, there are limited opportunities to work from home in this role. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will spend the majority of their time working on site at AWE Alverstoke.
