Lead Clinical Practice Facilitator (CPF) - Anaesthetics

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work as part of the UCLH Theatre and Anaesthesia team as a Lead Clinical Practice Facilitator with a main focus of leading on the development and training of our theatre anaesthetic practitioners and operating department practitioners.

In order to practice the role, you must be an Operating Department Practitioner registered with the Health Professions Council (HCPC) OR a NMC registered Nurse (with appropriate and accredited post-graduate anaesthetic module/course).

You will be required to function effectively as a leader of the peri-operative team to ensure the provision of an efficient and high-quality surgical service. You must be organised, have excellent interpersonal and communication skills with experience of supervising a multi-disciplinary team providing the highest standard of perioperative education across a varied case-load.

You must be motivated and enthusiastic, as well as have the ability to work well under pressure and flexibly as part of a multi-disciplinary team. You should be able to ensure a welcoming, caring and safe environment, to promote, maintain and monitor standards in accordance with the guidelines of the NMC/HCPC and CQC. You must also have experience in leading teams, engagement in recruitment and retention activities, and supervising students / supporting programmes of learning.

As Lead Clinical Practice Facilitator, you must have a good knowledge and experience in perioperative practice and an excellent understanding of peri-anaesthesia care and education.

Monitor the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care including admission and discharge planning for each patient and promoting best evidence-based practice. You will supervise and support members of the different theatres sites, with particular focus on anaesthetic staff and operating department practitioners, ensuring that all staff is able to provide the highest standard of care.

To take charge of the Theatres Education Team in the absence of Senior Nurse following performance review against the agreed KSF outline and progression through the first gateway

To participate in clinical supervision programmes as appropriate and teach and act as a facilitator/mentor/preceptor to junior practitioners and learners.

To demonstrate leadership skills and experience in the management of the department and provide high level of specialist clinical leadership.

Support the training and development programme initiated by the Division to ensure staff members achieve their full potential.

Maximise use of clinical resources, implementing best practice in patient flow, admission and discharge arrangements.

Ensure E-rota and electronic patient records are implemented and used to their full potential

To maintain a visible presence in the ward /department, undertaking clinical work regularly

• Be accountable for their practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve their knowledge and professional competence.
• Lead in the development and implementation of education projects and activities in the department, with particular focus on the anaesthetic work stream.
• Assume the lead educator role for operating department practitioners.
• Assist in the development and implementation of Audit, Quality and Risk Management initiatives in the department and participate in the implementation of changes to improve service delivery.
• Promote and maintain effective communication with a range of stakeholders across the Trust and externally.
• Lead the team and build successful links between key professionals to support and promote effective multi-disciplinary team working.
• Organise team meetings at an appropriate frequency, recording and circulating minutes of these.
• Ensure a good method of communication within the department at all times and to encourage the exchange and implementation of new ideas and evidence-based practice.
• Maximise use of clinical resources, implementing best practice in patient flow, admission and discharge arrangements.
• Manage and support the nursing staff, ensuring the patients receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.
• Monitor monthly budget statements, identifying trends, understanding spending patterns in order to stay in budget and to take action as required and comply with the Trust’s standing financial instructions.
• Participate in appraisals and the setting of objectives for junior staff in the department to enable them to achieve optimal effectiveness and to understand their contribution to the directorate.
• Ensure that appropriate written induction programmes are available and utilised for all new staff within the department.
• Ensure the Matrons are informed when changes to circumstances may affect safe competent practice.
• Identify and intervene where circumstances contribute to an unsafe environment for patients and staff and bring instances to the attention of the Matron and Senior Nurse for the area.
• Lead and support the team through the process of change, demonstrating tenacity, drive, professional integrity, balance and perspective.
• Ensure that nursing staff receive appropriate training and professional education in accordance with the NMC’s PREP Recommendations.
• Ensure that staff attend and assist in training where appropriate on mandatory training sessions and maintain accurate records of these.
• Liaise with affiliated Institutes of Higher Education to ensure that the learning environment is appropriate for both pre and post registration learners and undertaking any action identified through audit.
• Participate in the education and assessment of staff undertaking a specialist course or further education programmes.
• Working closely with the Practice Development Team, ensure that relevant clinical based teaching programmes are in place and maintain accurate training records.
• Ensure all staff move and handle patients and goods in ways that promote the health of the patient and care team and are consistent with legislation.
• Contribute to the development of Directorate and Trust policies, procedures and clinical guidelines and ensure adherence by self and team.
• Implement and work within the Trust’s HR policies on all staffing matters, including sickness, capability and disciplinary issues. Take corrective measures if indicated in liaison with Human Resources and the Matron.
• Work with the Matron and Human Resources Department in the recruitment, selection, appointment and retention of staff.
• Monitor recruitment and retention and use all available strategies to retain and motivate staff e.g. flexible working policy.
• Be proactive in the risk assessment, management, clinical incident reporting and management of complaints. Assist in the investigation and timely resolution of complaints.
• Identify opportunities to develop new ways of working and challenges, change and expand roles, working in conjunction with the Education and Practice Development Team/s, Senior Nurse and Matron.
• Proactively seek feedback on patient and public experience in order to address concerns in a timely manner and build on success.
• Assist with the development, implementation and evaluation of departmental protocols ensuring coherence and consistency across the Trust.
• Take responsibility for ensuring the highest standards of Infection prevention and control are practiced at all times.
• Demonstrate a high level of commitment to and enthusiasm for research, evidence based practice, audit and education in the clinical area.
• Record and report all incidents, accidents and complaints involving staff, patients and visitors in accordance with the trust policies and initiate investigations as required.
• Deputise for the Senior Nurse as appropriate
