Locum SHO (CT1) – Paediatrics
NHS Trust | ASAP Start | Full‑time | On‑site Role Summary The Locum SHO (CT1) in Paediatrics will support the safe assessment and management of infants, children, and young people across inpatient wards, the Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU), and the Emergency Department. The postholder will work under the supervision of registrars and consultants, contributing to acute care, routine reviews, safeguarding assessments, and family communication. Key ResponsibilitiesAcute paediatric assessment — Clerk and assess children presenting with acute illness in PAU or ED, initiating investigations and management plans. Ward cover — Daily review of inpatients, documentation, fluid management, prescribing, and escalation of concerns. Neonatal support — Participate in postnatal ward rounds, newborn checks, and support neonatal care (depending on Trust). On‑call duties — Provide out‑of‑hours cover for paediatrics and neonates as per rota. Family communication — Explain diagnoses, management plans, and safety‑netting advice to parents and carers. Safeguarding — Recognise and escalate safeguarding concerns in line with Trust policy. Procedures — Perform cannulation, venepuncture, lumbar puncture (training provided), and basic airway support. MDT collaboration — Work with nurses, health visitors, safeguarding teams, and allied health professionals. Clinical governance — Attend teaching, participate in audits, QI projects, and simulation training. Required Qualifications & Experience
GMC full registration with licence to practise Minimum CT1‑level experience in paediatrics, emergency medicine, or general medicine Competence in basic paediatric assessment and acute care ALS or EPLS (or willingness to obtain) Ability to recognise and escalate unwell children Desirable Experience
Previous paediatrics or neonatal experience Familiarity with PEWS, bronchiolitis management, asthma pathways, and common paediatric presentations Experience with safeguarding documentation Participation in paediatric audit or QI work Skills & Competencies
Strong clinical judgement and early recognition of deterioration Excellent communication with children, parents, and MDT Ability to work calmly in a fast‑paced environment Good organisational skills and accurate documentation Commitment to patient safety and family‑centred care Work Schedule
Full‑time, typically 40 hours per week Mix of ward work, PAU, ED cover, and neonatal duties On‑call commitments depending on Trust rota ASAP start, initial contract 1–3 months with potential extension Additional Information
