We require a motivated and enthusiastic individual to work as a staff nurse on the Haematology and Young Oncology Day unit services at the Christie Hospital in Manchester. This role includes providing a high standard of care for patients with haematological malignancies, lymphoma and teenage oncology patients attending the day care unit, working within a recognised framework in accordance with NMC Code of Professional Conduct, The Christie Policies and Health and Safety Legislation. We require a nurse who is eager to learn new skills, such as cannulation. Venepuncture, Chemotherapy giving, providing support to all our patients, and continued learning and development through the role to enhance patient care.
We are seeking enthusiastic, motivated nurses who are flexible, display initiative and possess excellent communication skills.
As part of our expanding services we have a band 6 vacancy. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating service delivery on the Haematology and Transplant day unit and on the Teenage and Young Adult service.
Experience in Haematology or Oncology is essential, Teenage and Young adult (TYA) nursing desirable. Training and support will be given. The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country. We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years. We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK. Clinical 1. To assess and triage patients appropriately, seeking intervention from other members of the multidisciplinary team as necessary. 2. Assessment of the needs of the patient and family, ensuring provision of patient centred care which focuses on the promotion of health as well as illness. 3. Ensure accurate documentation of patient care in accordance with hospital policies and standards. 4. Maintain safe practice according to Hospital Policies and Standards. 5. Ensure all prescribed drugs and treatments are given in accordance with Hospital Policy. 6. Maintain a clean and safe environment for immuno-compromised patients. 7. Ensure that blood products are administered correctly and in accordance with Hospital Procedure and Policy. 8. Administer chemotherapy and bolus chemotherapy via established central lines and peripheral cannula in line with hospital policy and UKONS standards. 9. Liaise with external multidisciplinary teams (eg: district nurses, Macmillan nursed, hospice staff)10. Provide a supportive service to patients and carers/families from diagnosis through all stages of the disease. 11. Monitor results and bring to the notice of appropriate medical staff if abnormal to minimise risk to patient. 12. Arrange patients follow up appointment or admission dates for next course of treatments. 13. Work closely with ward manager and specialist nurses to facilitate seamless transition for patients from inpatient to outpatient status (and vice versa)14. Establish and maintain close collaboration with consultant, medical staff to facilitate the best possible patient care. Managerial: 1. To rotate through the units and coordinate day to day running of the haematology day unit and Young oncology day unit ensuring that standards of care are maintained. 2. Liaise with Senior Sisters of the department (HTDU & outpatient clinics, apheresis, YOU day unit). 3. Keep Senior Nurse Managers/Lead nurses aware of pertinent issues in the clinical area. 4. Help foster a supportive working environment and maintenance of staff morale, promoting a culture where staff feel valued and are able to reach their potential. 5. Act as preceptor/mentor to new ward staff and Pre and Post registered Nurse. 6. Work with Senior sister to ensure clinical standards of care are achieved and participate in audit of clinical care. 7. Be aware of responsibilities with regard to Health and Safety at Work Act. Maintain and develop an environment and culture that improves health, safety and security. 8. Supporting the Senior sister in initiating and implementing change, and in promoting an awareness of professional accountability. 9. Supporting the senior sister when appropriate, in the recruitment and selection of new staff to the clinical area. 10. Actively participate in Clinical Risk Assessments and ensure correct documentation of Clinical Incidents in accordance with Hospital Policy. 11. Lead a team of registered nurses and health care assistants. 12. Economic use of resources. Research: 1. Maintain a sound knowledge base of relevant research. 2. Assist in the application and evaluation of current research findings in order to ensure quality evidence based practice. 3. Develop research interests within the specialist field of practice. 4. Participate as required/requested in research and audit initiated by other members of the multidisciplinary team. Education: 1. Maintain own awareness of current nursing practice. Use relevant educational opportunities to maintain the highest standards and up to date care offered to patient with cancer. 2. Supervise clinical staff and disseminate knowledge and current developments. Develop oneself and others in areas of practice. 3. Participate in planned programmes of appraisal with the senior sister. 4. Ensure own learning and development needs are met. 5. Maintain own mandatory training requirements. 6. Attend appropriate study days/conferences. Professional Development: 1. In consultation with the unit manager agree learning objectives designed to meet the goals of personal and professional development and undergo appropriate programmes of study. 2. Gain teaching skills by undertaking a teaching and assessing course and applying the principles in the clinical setting. 3. Accept responsibility to develop managerial skills within the clinical setting. 4. Contribute to the improvement of services. 5. Contribute to improving quality. Personal: 1. Demonstrate a pleasant and approachable manner and help create and promote a good working relationship. 2. Show a professional and courteous manner when answering the telephone and other enquires. 3. Maintain confidentiality with regard to patient information both at work and outside of working hours. 4. To be aware of and adhere to all policies including; sickness and absence, confidentiality, uniform and responsibilities under the Health and Safety at work act. 5. Report and record all accidents, incidents and complaints according to the agreed policy. 6. To be aware of limitations and utilise the preceptor system for any issues that arise. 7.
