Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and experienced haematology and/or oncology nurse to join our team in a Band 6 Junior Sister/Charge Nurse role to join the nurse-led Ambulatory and Supportive Care Day Case Unit (J87) in the Bexley Wing in St James’s Hospital, a full-time permanent position. We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic individual with excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills to support the senior sister in managing and developing the unit and lead the nursing team. We are very keen to hear from experienced registered nurses who want to work within this very close and supportive nurse-led team, who strive to give the best possible care they can to their patients and who are ready for a new challenge. Experience of and an ability to give intravenous chemotherapy would be a considerable advantage. Why you should join our Tea
J87 has 3 areas of patient activity: Ambulatory care, supportive care and the haematology outpatient department. We provide outpatient chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy treatments for oncology and malignant & non-malignant haematology patients. The department is open 7 days a week: 8.00-19.30 Monday-Friday and 8.30-16.30 at weekends. Staff are required to work weekends in rotation. The experience & clinical skills that you will gain from working in this area are vast. You will work alongside other Band 6 nurses and the senior sister and be involved in the education of nurses and patients and gain experience in e-rostering, absence management, staff appraisals and other operational duties. There are also a variety of clinical skills that you will be involved in, such as the delivery of chemotherapy, cannulation and phlebotomy, CVAD access, venesection, intrathecal chemotherapy competency and administration of stem cells. What you will bring to the role
We are looking for an experienced and motivated nurse who can provide visible clinical leadership within a busy and dynamic ambulatory cancer service. The successful candidate will bring extensive experience in oncology and/or haematology nursing, with a sound understanding of Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) and the complex needs of patients receiving cancer treatment and supportive care. You will be an effective leader with the ability to motivate, support and develop staff, fostering a positive team culture and maintaining high standards of patient care. Excellent communication, organisational and decision-making skills are essential, alongside the ability to manage competing priorities and lead service improvements in a fast-paced environment. The role requires a compassionate, patient-focused approach, a commitment to quality and safety, and the confidence to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams. Experience in administering intravenous chemotherapy and leading change would be highly advantageous. Most importantly, you will bring enthusiasm, resilience and a passion for continuously improving the experience and outcomes of patients and their families. About Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust
