Central News Reader

Your role: The creation of the Onic News Hub represents a strategic shift toward broadcast specialisation. As an Onic Hub Journalist, you are at the operational heart of Onic’s networked news strategy. Your primary focus is on elite-level content curation, scripting, and on-air delivery.

Operating from our centralised hub, you will compile, voice, and distribute high-quality, bespoke news and sports bulletins for our six local stations. You will seamlessly blend national and international wire copy with hyper-local audio and scripts sent in by our "on-the-ground" local journalists. This role requires a fast-paced mind and an exceptional broadcast voice, ensuring every station bulletin sounds authoritative, distinct, and deeply connected to its audience.

Day to day you will:

Bulletin Curation & Production:

  • Compile hourly and half hourly news and sport bulletins tailored specifically to each of the six Onic brands, ensuring the right balance of local, national, and international stories.

  • Monitor and utilise national and international news wires (including the Bauer news syndicate) to script accurate, engaging, and concise copy for shared broadcast.

  • Receive, edit, and seamlessly integrate audio assets, soundbites, and local copy provided by our network of Multi-Media Local Journalists stationed across the country.

Elite On-Air Delivery:

  • Adapt your voice delivery to suit each brand's distinct tone when reading bulletins for multiple stations, adhering to brand-specific style guides.

  • Ensure all station intros, outros, and station-specific sweepers are flawlessly executed to maintain the local identity and listener trust of each individual brand.

Editorial Standards & Compliance:

  • React swiftly to breaking national and international news, ensuring all bulletins are updated dynamically and accurately.

  • Ensure all copy generated within the Hub adheres strictly to media law (defamation, contempt) and the Coimisiún na Meán (CNaM) Codes of Fairness, Objectivity, and Impartiality.

  • Work closely with and seek direction from the Group Head of News & Sport to maintain consistent editorial policies and standardise best practices across all Onic news and sport output.

Operational Excellence:

  • Manage the technical distribution of networked content, ensuring the correct audio reaches the correct split-link playout systems precisely on time.

  • Collaborate with the wider Hub team and freelance panel to ensure a smooth handover of live copy and audio during shift changes, weekends, and peak periods.

What we're looking for from you:

  • Broadcast & Journalism Experience: A degree in journalism or media, with extensive experience in a fast-paced radio newsroom environment.

  • Exceptional Voice & Delivery: A highly versatile, authoritative, and engaging broadcast voice. (Applicants must provide an audio showreel demonstrating different bulletin reading styles).

  • Fast-Paced Curation: A proven ability to synthesize large amounts of information from wire services and local reporters into punchy, accurate radio copy under strict hourly deadlines.

  • Technical Mastery: Highly proficient in the News Boss software system, audio editing software, and network playout/distribution systems.

  • Brand Agility: A deep understanding of Onic's different station demographics and the ability to instantly switch gears between a young urban audience and a mature regional audience.

  • Shift Flexibility: Willingness to work a structured roster that includes early mornings and evenings.

We are Onic: Every day our audiences welcome us into their lives and allow us to share their day through.
