History Teacher - Newark, Nottinghamshire

A well-established and forward-thinking 11–18 secondary school in Newark is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Teacher of History to join its successful Humanities faculty. This is a full-time, permanent opportunity within a school that places strong value on academic rigour, thoughtful discussion and high-quality teaching.

History is a popular and respected subject within the school, with strong uptake at GCSE and A-Level. The department is known for developing confident, articulate students who can think critically and engage meaningfully with the past.

The Role

You will teach History across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 , delivering a curriculum that is knowledge-rich, well-sequenced and designed to build strong historical understanding over time.

At Key Stage 3, students explore a broad range of topics that balance British, European and global history. Lessons focus on chronology, causation, significance and interpretation, with a strong emphasis on historical literacy and source analysis.

At GCSE, students respond well to the department’s structured approach to exam preparation, which combines deep content knowledge with regular practice in extended writing and interpretation questions. A-Level teaching focuses on developing independence, critical thinking and academic writing skills, with strong outcomes and progression to higher education.

You’ll be encouraged to bring your own passion and subject expertise into lessons while working within a shared framework that supports consistency and progression.

The History Department

The History department is a collaborative and experienced team, working closely together on curriculum planning, assessment design and resource development. Schemes of work are well-established and regularly reviewed, ensuring clarity and reducing unnecessary workload.

Department meetings are purposeful and focused on improving teaching and learning rather than administrative tasks. Staff share resources openly and support one another with marking strategies, intervention planning and enrichment activities.

The department also runs a range of enrichment opportunities, including:

  • Visits to local historical sites and museums

  • Guest speakers and workshops

  • Extended learning projects and essay competitions

The School

This Good-rated secondary school has a strong reputation locally for its calm learning environment, respectful student behaviour and supportive pastoral systems. Students are motivated, well-supported and respond positively to clear routines and high expectations.

Leadership is approachable and values staff voice. Workload is carefully considered, with an emphasis on sustainable teaching practices and professional trust. Staff retention is strong, and the school has a reputation as a place where teachers are supported to develop and stay long term.

Facilities and Learning Environment

The Humanities department is based in a dedicated area of the school, with bright, well-resourced classrooms and access to shared digital platforms for lesson resources and assessments. Visualisers and interactive screens are widely used to support modelling and discussion.

Library and research facilities are actively used by History students, particularly at GCSE and A-Level, supporting independent study and extended writing.

Professional Development

The school offers a strong CPD programme, including:

  • Subject-specific training within Humanities

  • Coaching and peer observation

  • Opportunities to contribute to curriculum development

  • Clear progression routes for future leadership

Both early career and experienced teachers are supported through structured mentoring and regular feedback.

The Ideal Candidate

You will:

  • Hold QTS or equivalent

  • Have strong subject knowledge in History

  • Be confident teaching across KS3 and KS4 (KS5 desirable)

  • Value discussion, enquiry and academic rigour

  • Be reflective, organised and collaborative

Why Apply?

  • Strong, established History department

  • Motivated students and calm classrooms

  • Supportive leadership and realistic workload

  • Excellent opportunities for professional growth

If you’re a History Teacher seeking a role in a school that values thoughtful teaching, collaboration and subject expertise, we’d be delighted to receive your CV.
