Job Description

We are looking for collaborative, technically curious graduates who are interested in understanding how complex railway systems work as a whole.

Systems Engineering & Systems Assurance (SESA) brings together systems thinking, integration and assurance to help ensure that complex railway systems are clearly defined, effectively integrated, verified and validated, and supported by appropriate engineering and assurance evidence.

As a graduate within SESA, you will work across the engineering lifecycle alongside disciplines such as signalling, telecommunications, rolling stock, track, civils, stations, power, operations and maintenance.

You will initially work under the guidance of experienced engineers and progressively take ownership of defined technical activities and work packages as your capability develops.

Job Responsibilities  

Selected candidates will be enrolled on our Graduate Development Programme and have the opportunity to develop their skills within a supporting environment which encourages challenge and collaborative behaviours.

Depending on the project and your developing experience, you may:

• Support Systems Engineering, Systems Integration and Systems Assurance activities on live rail and infrastructure projects.
• Contribute to system definitions, including boundaries, functions, interfaces, assumptions and operational context.
• Support requirements management, including capture, review, allocation, traceability, change and compliance.
• Support systems integration and interface management, helping identify and resolve multidisciplinary technical issues.
• Contribute to verification and validation (V&V) planning, evidence development and technical reviews.
• Support the preparation of Systems Engineering plans, integration strategies, assurance reports, compliance records and other technical documentation.
• Contribute to systems safety and risk activities, including hazard identification, hazard management and risk assessment.
• Work collaboratively with engineering disciplines, clients and operational stakeholders.
• Develop an understanding of railway standards, engineering processes and regulatory requirements.
• Apply whole-system and whole-life thinking, considering how requirements, interfaces, safety, reliability, operations, maintenance and verification interact.
• Use requirements-management, digital engineering, modelling and data-analysis tools where appropriate.
• Progressively take responsibility for defined technical tasks and work packages.

Through project experience, mentoring and training, you will develop capability across Systems Engineering, Systems Integration, Systems Safety and Assurance, with opportunities to specialize as your career develops.

Qualifications

• Beng, BSc, or MEng in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Railway Engineering, Project Management, Computer Science, Mathematics or Physics or a related discipline with a 2:1 (or equivalent).
• Have a genuine interest in rail systems, complex infrastructure and multidisciplinary engineering.
• Be analytical, curious and interested in understanding how different parts of a system interact.
• Communicate clearly and work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Demonstrate initiative, professionalism, willingness to learn and constructive challenge.

Be comfortable developing both technical knowledge and broader systems thinking. Applicants from Project Management or related backgrounds are welcomed where they can demonstrate a strong interest in engineering, systems integration and complex technical projects, together with the aptitude and willingness to develop technical Systems Engineering and assurance capability.
