REPORTS TO THE SITE MANAGER

Most of what decides whether a habitat takes is done by hand. Seed in at the right depth, a pond edge cut so it still holds water in a dry summer, and someone coming back in the aftercare season once everyone else's attention has moved on. That is the work in this job.

THE ROLE

You will be on the tools every day, creating and enhancing habitats such as woodlands, wetlands and wildflower meadows, with general land maintenance and site restoration alongside it. We are looking for someone who has done this kind of work before and takes pride in how a site looks when they leave it.

You will be based at Quainton, working with ecologists, project managers and the rest of the site team, with travel to other sites and overnight stays where a project needs it.

The work on the ground

• Establishing and maintaining habitats such as wildflower meadows, wetlands, woodland edges and scrubland.
• Planting, seeding and translocating native species in line with rewilding principles.
• Identifying and removing non-native or invasive species using manual, mechanical or chemical control as appropriate, supporting native flora and fauna.
• Constructing and maintaining habitat features such as ponds, hibernacula, wildlife corridors and pollinator banks.
• Preparing land for conservation works, including fencing, mulching, turf removal and ground levelling.
• Ongoing aftercare so vegetation and habitats establish properly.
• Monitoring plant growth, soil health and ecological indicators to track how a habitat is developing, and assisting with data collection for environmental reporting and project evaluation.

Tools, machinery and teamwork

• Safe operation of landscaping tools and machinery, including strimmers, brushcutters, chainsaws and hand tools, with regular equipment checks and basic maintenance.
• Working with ecologists, project managers and other field teams to deliver the project, and communicating with clients, landowners and the public where needed.

Safety, standards and travel

• Following health and safety procedures at all times and working safely outdoors, including drug and alcohol testing where the client requires it. There is no flexibility on this.
• Working to our sustainability goals and environmental standards, including land management practices that support biodiversity and carbon capture.
• Working across multiple sites throughout the UK, sometimes in remote or difficult terrain and weather, and staying overnight when required.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

Essential

• Hands-on experience on landscaping or environmental projects, ideally covering land management, ecological restoration or site preparation.
• Familiarity with tools and machinery, planting schemes and site-based outdoor work.
• A current CSCS card.
• Relevant tickets including strimming, ride-on mower and brushcutter.
• Full UK driving licence and use of your own vehicle.

Desirable

• Involvement in habitat creation projects such as wildflower meadows, wetlands, woodland planting or pond creation, with an understanding of the ecology behind them.
• Trailer towing.
• Banksman.
