Job summary
C14B is a busy surgical ward, looking after a variety of conditions from liver resections to cholecystitis. We currently have 17 beds and have a broad range of patients who deserve to receive high quality nursing care. We are looking for an enthusiastic, hard-working and flexible nurse to join the team. We care for patients who are electively undergoing surgery and emergency patients both HPB and colorectal. We are the regional speciality area for HPB surgeries and take patients requiring surgical/specialist interventions from Blackpool and the Fylde Coast, South Lakes and Lancaster. Main duties of the job
You will be responsible for the safe, personal and effective care delivery to complex surgical patients, who require support from a wide range of nursing interventions, based on their individual needs. This will be ascertained following a detailed assessment of the patient on transfer to the ward either from the emergency surgical unit, theatre or critical care. You will be responsible for between 5 and 8 patients usually, with medication administration, wound care, recognising deteriorating patients and acting accordingly, methods of specific analgesia such as PCA and epidurals, pre and post op care as well as managing patients stepping down form critical care. You will also be responsible for organising your shift working alongside one of our HCA's delivering care to your patients meeting their needs in relation to the activities of daily living such as mobility, skin integument, hygiene and nutrition. Please note this list is not exhaustive and being able to work under your own initiative and be responsive to the changing needs of the patients and the ward is important. You must be able to prioritise care accordingly. About us
At East Lancashire Hospitals Trust, our vision is to be widely recognised for providing safe, personal and effective care. We currently provide high quality services and treat over 600,000 people across East Lancashire and the surrounding area. We employ over 7,000 staff, many of whom are internationally renowned and have won awards for their work. C14B achieved the highest accolade during the Nursing Assessment Performance Framework assessment, achieving Gold, of which the team is very proud. We are now working towards achieving a good result on the new assessment framework, the QAAF. We are striving to continue to ensure our patients receive a high standard of care in line with the Trust's Visions and values. Job responsibilities
You will be responsible for managing a number of patients and delivering safe, personal and effective care to them, based around their individual needs. You will be expected to administer medications via various routes and methods, recording physiological measurements and acting on them accordingly. Safely preparing patients for theatre, safely caring for patients on their return to the ward from theatre or critical care. Being involved in the planning, assessing, implementation and evaluating individualised care. Working alongside members of the MDT, communicating effectively with all members of the team. Wound care, ANTT, IV therapies, risk assessments, audits, acting as mentor to junior and untrained staff, including student nurses are all skills you will have or be working towards. We also strive to deliver high standards of palliative care to patients as well as working with other members of the MDT to deliver care that is individualised, involving people who are important to the patient. As the Trust uses electronic patient records, a competency with this system (cerner Millenium) would be useful but training will be given. Person Specification
