Volunteer Head of Finance (Leadership Team)

Head of Finance (Leadership Team)

Volunteer Leadership Role

Closing Date 7th October 2026

Your Pride in London

Pride in London is London’s volunteer-powered LGBTQIA+ force. We unite our communities, amplify their diversity and stand together against inequality.

While progress has been made, LGBTQIA+ people continue to experience discrimination and inequality in the UK and around the world. Pride remains both a celebration and a protest: a visible expression of who we are and a powerful platform for advancing equality, dignity and freedom for all.

Around 150 volunteers work throughout the year to deliver Pride in London and our wider programme of activity. We want our organisation, our leadership and our events to reflect the full diversity of the communities we serve.

We particularly welcome applications from people who are currently underrepresented within our volunteer leadership, including women, trans and non-binary people, disabled people and people from Black, Asian and other global majority communities. We also welcome applications from people with a broad range of lived experiences and professional backgrounds.

If you share our values of visibility, unity and equality, we would love you to consider joining us.

About the role

We are looking for an experienced, hands-on and forward-thinking finance professional to join Pride in London as our volunteer Head of Finance.

This is a senior volunteer leadership role responsible for helping Pride in London maintain strong financial management, effective controls and clear financial oversight. Working closely with the CEO, Board, budget holders, volunteer leaders and external finance providers, you will help ensure that the organisation uses its resources responsibly and remains financially sustainable.

You will oversee budgeting, management reporting, cash-flow forecasting, financial controls and the organisation’s day-to-day accounting arrangements. You will also coordinate the preparation of annual accounts, support the external audit and help ensure compliance with the financial and regulatory requirements applying to London LGBT Community Pride CIC.

This role requires someone who is comfortable operating strategically while remaining close to the financial detail. You will be able to interpret financial information clearly, identify emerging risks and provide practical advice to support timely and informed decision-making.

Time commitment

This volunteer role requires a regular commitment of approximately 6–8 hours each week. We will work with the successful candidate to agree a working pattern that is manageable alongside their other commitments.

There will be periods during the year—particularly during annual budgeting, year-end reporting and the lead-up to Pride in London when additional availability may be required. This may include supporting urgent financial decisions, reviewing forecasts and being available during key operational delivery periods.

Wherever possible, these increased requirements will be planned and communicated in advance.

Key responsibilities

Financial strategy and leadership

  • Work with the CEO and Board to develop and maintain the organisation’s financial strategy.

  • Provide clear, accurate and timely financial advice to support organisational planning and decision-making.

  • Help ensure that financial resources are aligned with Pride in London’s strategic priorities and community purpose.

  • Support the development of a financially sustainable operating model, including appropriate reserves and contingency planning.

  • Promote a culture of financial responsibility, accountability and transparency across the organisation.

  • Translate complex financial information into clear and accessible advice for colleagues without a finance background.

Budgeting and financial planning

  • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the CEO, budget holders and relevant volunteer leaders.

  • Develop and maintain accurate income, expenditure and cash-flow forecasts.

  • Monitor performance against agreed budgets and identify significant variances, pressures and emerging risks.

  • Work with budget holders to understand variances and agree appropriate corrective action.

  • Support scenario planning and financial modelling to inform strategic and operational decisions.

  • Ensure that budgets reflect realistic assumptions about income, expenditure, contractual commitments and event delivery costs.

Management reporting

  • Prepare and present clear, accurate and timely monthly management accounts and financial reports.

  • Provide the CEO and Board with appropriate analysis of the organisation’s financial position, performance and outlook.

  • Develop accessible financial dashboards covering areas such as income, expenditure, cash flow, reserves, debtors and financial risk.

  • Clearly identify matters requiring management attention, intervention or Board-level decision.

  • Ensure that financial reports provide an accurate and balanced account of the organisation’s financial position.

Cash-flow and treasury management

  • Maintain oversight of the organisation’s cash position and short- and medium-term liquidity requirements.

  • Prepare and regularly update cash-flow forecasts, highlighting potential pressures or funding gaps at the earliest opportunity.

  • Monitor expected income, payment obligations and significant financial commitments.

  • Support the effective management of banking arrangements, payment controls and access permissions.

  • Work with the CEO and relevant teams to manage financial pressures and protect the organisation’s ability to meet its obligations.

  • Help ensure that restricted, designated or ring-fenced funds are identified, recorded and used appropriately.

Financial operations and controls

  • Oversee the organisation’s day-to-day financial processes, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoicing, credit control, expenses, reconciliations and maintenance of the general ledger.

  • Establish and maintain proportionate financial policies, procedures and internal controls.

  • Ensure that financial responsibilities, approval limits and delegated authorities are clearly documented and understood.

  • Review the effectiveness of financial systems and recommend improvements where required.

  • Help ensure that transactions are properly authorised, accurately recorded and supported by appropriate documentation.

  • Support the prevention and identification of fraud, financial misconduct and inappropriate use of organisational resources.

  • Maintain appropriate oversight of financial information held within accounting and operational systems, including Xero and other relevant platforms.

Income, invoicing and credit control

  • Maintain oversight of invoicing and income collection across partnerships, parade participation, Pride in the City, concessions, ticketing and other revenue streams.

  • Monitor aged debtors and support timely and proportionate credit control activity.

  • Work with income generating teams to ensure that contracts, invoices and payment schedules are accurate and aligned.

  • Support the reconciliation of income received through operational, registration and ticketing systems.

  • Identify and address weaknesses or inconsistencies in invoicing and income-recognition processes.

  • Ensure that grants, sponsorship income, donations and other funding are recorded and reported appropriately.

Statutory accounts, audit and taxation

  • Coordinate the preparation of the organisation’s annual statutory accounts and supporting information.

  • Act as a key contact for the organisation’s external accountants, independent auditors and other financial advisers.

  • Coordinate the annual audit or independent examination process and ensure that requested information is provided accurately and promptly.

  • Support the CEO and Board in responding to audit findings and implementing agreed recommendations.

  • Maintain oversight of relevant tax obligations, including VAT and any other applicable reporting requirements.

  • Help ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, Companies House requirements and the financial obligations of a community interest company.

  • Work with the Head of Legal, Company Secretary and external advisers where financial, legal and regulatory responsibilities overlap.

Financial governance and risk

  • Support the Board in fulfilling its responsibilities for financial stewardship and oversight.

  • Advise on financial governance, delegated authorities and the appropriate separation of duties.

  • Identify, assess and report significant financial risks, including liquidity, income, expenditure, fraud, taxation and financial-control risks.

  • Maintain appropriate financial risk information and contribute to the organisation’s wider risk-management framework.

  • Support the development and regular review of financial policies, including reserves, expenses, procurement, credit control and financial authorisation.

  • Escalate significant concerns promptly to the CEO and, where appropriate, the Board or relevant Board committee.

  • Provide financial information and advice to the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee or equivalent governance body.

Event and operational delivery

  • Provide financial oversight and advice in support of the planning and delivery of Pride in London and its associated events and programmes.

  • Work with operational teams to establish and monitor event budgets, supplier commitments and anticipated income.

  • Support effective purchase-order, contracting, invoicing and payment processes during the event-delivery period.

  • Help ensure that financial decisions made during fast-moving operational periods remain properly authorised and documented.

  • Provide timely financial information to support event-related decisions and contingency planning.

  • Be available during agreed key delivery periods to advise on urgent financial matters.

Team leadership and collaboration

  • Lead, support and develop Pride in London’s volunteer finance team.

  • Help define finance-team responsibilities and recruit additional volunteers where appropriate.

  • Allocate work effectively and ensure that responsibilities are supported by appropriate review and oversight.

  • Build constructive working relationships with the CEO, Board, volunteer leaders, budget holders and external advisers.

  • Help colleagues understand and fulfil their financial responsibilities.

  • Promote Pride in London’s values and contribute to an inclusive, respectful and supportive volunteering culture.

What you will bring

Essential

  • A recognised professional accountancy qualification, such as ACA, ACCA, CIMA or an equivalent qualification.

  • Relevant post-qualification experience within a finance, accounting or financial-management role.

  • Experience preparing management accounts, budgets, cash-flow forecasts and financial statements.

  • A strong understanding of financial controls, accounting principles and good financial governance.

  • Experience interpreting financial information and presenting clear recommendations to senior leaders or Board members.

  • The ability to operate effectively at both strategic and detailed operational levels.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and financial-modelling skills.

  • Advanced Excel skills and experience using accounting software.

  • Experience working with external accountants or auditors.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain financial matters clearly to non-finance colleagues.

  • The ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and respond effectively to time-sensitive matters.

  • High standards of integrity, confidentiality and professional judgement.

  • A collaborative, supportive and solutions-focused approach.

  • A commitment to Pride in London’s values of visibility, unity and equality.

Desirable

  • Experience working with a community interest company, charity, not-for-profit organisation or volunteer-led organisation.

  • Knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework applying to community interest companies.

  • Experience working within an events, membership, sponsorship or grant-funded organisation.

  • Experience overseeing accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoicing and credit control.

  • Knowledge of VAT and other taxation matters relevant to not-for-profit or event-based organisations.

  • Experience using Xero or a comparable cloud-based accounting platform.

  • Experience improving financial systems, processes and internal controls.

  • Experience leading or supporting a volunteer finance team.

  • Experience advising a Finance, Audit and Risk Committee or equivalent Board committee.

  • An understanding of the issues affecting LGBTQIA+ communities.

We recognise that people develop valuable skills and experience in different ways. If you meet most of the criteria and believe you could make a strong contribution to the role, we encourage you to apply.

What you will gain from volunteering with Pride in London

  • A welcoming and supportive induction.

  • Access to relevant learning and development opportunities.

  • The opportunity to use your expertise in support of LGBTQIA+ communities.

  • Meaningful senior-level experience within a high-profile, purpose-led organisation.

  • The opportunity to broaden your professional and community networks.

  • A central role in strengthening Pride in London’s financial sustainability and governance.

  • The opportunity to help deliver one of the world’s most visible Pride events.

  • Opportunities to connect and collaborate with a diverse and committed volunteer team.

  • The chance to contribute to an organisation working to advance LGBTQIA+ visibility, unity and equality.

Equity, diversity and inclusion

Pride in London is committed to creating an inclusive volunteering environment where everyone is treated with dignity and respect and feels able to contribute fully.

The diversity of our volunteers strengthens our organisation. Different identities, experiences, perspectives and ways of thinking help us make better decisions and create events and programmes that reflect the communities we serve.
