What you'll do at work
- System Installation: Assist with fitting pipes, ductwork, boilers, and ventilation units on new build and refurbishment projects
- Site Preparation: Measure, cut, and thread pipes using specialist hand and power tools safely
- Blueprint Reading: Learn to interpret engineering drawings, architectural plans, and technical specifications
- System Testing: Help test systems for leaks and structural integrity before they are commissioned
- Safety Compliance: Follow strict health and safety regulations on live construction sites at all times
- College Attendance: Complete all academic modules, practical assessments, and portfolio work required by Salford College

What you'll learn
Course contents- Comply with building services engineering industry regulations, standards, and guidance.
- Comply with health and safety regulations, standards, and practices.
- Identify and report hazards and risks in the workplace. Take action to mitigate hazards and risks.
- Comply with safe systems of work and apply control measures.
- Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Follow environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling, and disposal.
- Move, lift, and handle materials.
- Select and use personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Use and store hand tools, power tools and equipment.
- Prepare work area and complete set out requirements.
- Maintain a safe working area.
- Select materials, components, and fittings required to complete the work tasks.
- Plan order of works and carry out pre-work checks.
- Carry out pre commissioning activities for building service engineering installations.
- Fabricate system pipework including pipe bending.
- Test fabricated pipework system.
- Install pipework system, including pipework, bracketry and components of pipework systems, not including the energy source.
- Use pipework jointing techniques.
- Test installed pipework.
- Apply decommissioning practices, for example draining pipework system.
- Complete system handover activities.
- Complete a final quality inspection.
- Communicate with others verbally including internal and external customers, colleagues using sector specific terminology.
- Communicate with others in a written context including internal and external customers, colleagues using sector specific terminology.
- Interpret drawings from drawings, specifications, and system schematics.
- Record or enter information - paper based or electronic. For example, energy usage, job sheets, risk assessments, equipment service records, test results, handover documents and manufacturers' documentation, work sheets, checklists, waste environmental records and any legal reporting requirements.

Training schedule
- Training will be delivered through a combination of workplace learning, day release, and block release at City skills College
- The apprentice will work alongside experienced engineers on construction sites across the UK, gaining practical skills and industry experience
- College attendance will vary throughout the programme, with a mixture of regular day-release sessions and block-release periods to complete the knowledge, practical, and assessment requirements of the apprenticeship
- Potential progression onto the level 3 Building Service Engineer- craftperson course which will be discussed on completion of the level 2

Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
Maths and English (grade A* - C / 9 - 4)
Desirable qualifications
UK Driving Licence in:
Desirable due to travelling between sites. (grade .)
