Consultant Emergency General Surgeon

Job summary
We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Consultant General Surgeon with a special interest in Emergency General Surgery to join our expanding surgical team at Lincoln County Hospital and Grantham Hospital.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of Consultant General Surgeons delivering high-quality elective and emergency surgical care across Lincolnshire. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting and further developing our Emergency General Surgery service, including the Lincoln Emergency and Ambulatory General Surgery (LEAGS) service, whilst also maintaining an elective general surgery practice. The post includes outpatient, theatre, emergency surgical assessment and inpatient responsibilities, alongside opportunities for teaching, training, service development and research.

Main duties of the job

• Deliver high-quality emergency and elective general surgical care.
• Contribute to the Surgical Emergency Admission Unit (SEAU) and emergency general surgery pathways.
• Undertake elective theatre sessions and outpatient clinics.
• Participate in the Consultant on-call rota for Emergency General Surgery.
• Provide senior clinical decision-making and leadership within the multidisciplinary team.
• Support the ongoing development of ambulatory emergency surgery services.
• Supervise and train undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors in training.
• Contribute to clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and service development initiatives.
• Participate in departmental teaching programmes, mortality and morbidity meetings and multidisciplinary working

On-Call Responsibilities

• 1:9 Consultant Emergency General Surgery on-call rota.
• Weekend on-call from Saturday morning to Monday morning.
• Non-resident overnight on-call.
• Senior support for emergency admissions, ward referrals and emergency operating.

Teaching and Training

• Supervision of Foundation, Core, and Higher Surgical Trainees.
• Undergraduate teaching through Lincoln Medical School.
• Educational and clinical supervision following appropriate accreditation.
• Support for multidisciplinary staff education and development.

Audit, Governance and Service Development participation

• Clinical Governance and Morbidity & Mortality meetings.
• Local and national audits including NELA and NCEPOD.
• Contribution to research, quality improvement and service development.
• Support innovation within emergency and elective surgical pathways.

Job responsibilities
The successful candidate will join a team of Consultant General Surgeons providing emergency and elective surgical services across Lincolnshire. The role includes:

• Delivery of high-quality emergency and elective general surgery services.
• Participation in outpatient clinics, theatre lists and ward rounds.
• Contribution to the Surgical Assessment Unit and ambulatory emergency surgery pathways.
• Participation in the Consultant Emergency General Surgery on-call rota (1:9).
• Supervision and training of undergraduate and postgraduate learners.
• Active involvement in clinical governance, audit, service development and quality improvement activities.
• Working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams to support the delivery of safe, effective and patient-centred care

Qualifications
Essential

• Full GMC registration.
• FRCS (General Surgery) or equivalent.
• On the GMC Specialist Register for General Surgery, within six months of CCT, or at the point of submission of a Portfolio Pathway application.

Desirable

• Postgraduate higher degree (MD, MSc, PhD or equivalent).

Experience and Clinical Skills
Essential

• High standard of clinical skill and expertise in Emergency and Elective General Surgery.
• Broad operative experience demonstrated through an extensive logbook.
• Ability to work independently at Consultant level.

Desirable

• Previous Consultant-level experience.
• Accreditation as a Clinical Supervisor and/or Educational Supervisor.
• Experience of service development and redesign.
• Understanding of healthcare management and service organisation.
