Job summary
Applications are invited for a full-time Consultant Immunologist at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust. The post is based primarily at Frimley Park Hospital, although there are some sessions outside the main site. The postholder will be expected to contribute to and help develop the service in allergy, immunodeficiency and laboratory immunology.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will join a team of 2 consultants and 2 clinical nurse specialists. The service runs outpatients, both face to face and virtual clinics.

The successful candidate will be asked to
  • Undertake outpatient clinics in allergy and clinical immunology
  • Work with clinical and laboratory colleagues to maintain and develop the immunopathology service
  • Participate in the training of resident doctors and nursing team
  • Participate in research and development

Job responsibilities
Clinical: The consultant will be expected to develop and expand the existing clinical service for the investigation and management of patients with disorders of immunity, including allergy, immunodeficiency, and other clinical conditions where disordered immune function may play a role. Referrals will be from both primary and secondary care and will be conducted by regular out-patient clinics and by hospital, telephone and written consultations. The consultant will also be expected to work with clinical and laboratory colleagues to maintain and develop the immunopathology service, so that a high-quality, cost-effective service is provided.

Management and Administration: The post holder will be asked to undertake appropriate administrative responsibilities within the department and Trusts as agreed with the Speciality Lead and relevant Chief of Services. The post holder will be expected to cover other colleagues when on annual and study leave.

Training: The consultant will be expected to participate in the training of resident medical staff, nursing staff and biomedical scientists and will be expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate educational activities.

Research and Development: The consultant will be expected to participate in research and development and assist in the supervision of projects undertaken by junior medical staff, nursing staff and healthcare scientists.

Supporting Professional Activities: The consultant will be expected to participate in audit and continuing professional development (CPD) and to maintain an adequate CPD portfolio. Reasonable support, both in time and funding, will be available to support this activity. The consultant will also be expected to participate in the Trusts' appraisals scheme for medical staff. This is conducted within directorates and follows national guidelines. The job plan will be agreed at annual appraisal and will include recognition of time for essential clinical governance activity. In the event of an inability to agree the job plan, the matter will be referred to the medical director of the Trust.

The appointee will be provided with appropriate office accommodation; desktop computer, e-mail and internet and have full-time secretarial support. Good library facilities are available at the Postgraduate Medical Centres at FPH, St Peter's and the RSCH and at the University of Surrey.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Full GMC Registration
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • FRCPath or equivalent
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
Desirable
  • Additional postgraduate qualification such as MSc, MD or PhD
  • Trained Educational Supervisor
Experience
Essential
  • Relevant and up to date experience in the practice of Allergy and Immunology
  • Clinical experience sufficient to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients on an out-patient basis
  • Experience in multi-disciplinary clinical audit
  • Knowledge of principal components and involvement of consultant staff in NHS management
  • Experience of teaching and training resident medical, nursing and biomedical scientist staff.
  • Experience of research.
  • Recent clinical experience and training in specialist drug allergy and challenge/provocation testing
  • Able to demonstrate effective leadership skills
Desirable
  • Experience of business case preparation
