Course Summary
This course gives students an opportunity to study a broad range of topics in Physical Education from complex Anatomy and Physiology to the socio-cultural impacts of Sport on individuals and communities. This course considers how we learn and how we develop skills in physical activity, also known as Skill Acquisition. Students will have an opportunity to be assessed physically in a full version of a physical activity as either a coach or performer, this is accompanied by a written analysis of their performance.
This course gives you an insight into the academic aspects of Physical Education. You will study a series of topics which link to other courses and subjects, this breadth of knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology, Psychology, Sociology and Analysis of Sports Performance will give you a great foundation for further study at University.
Course Details
Students will study all of the below topics:
- Applied Anatomy and Physiology
- Skill acquisition
- Sport in Society
- Exercise Physiology
- Biomechanical movement
- Sport Psychology
- Sport and Society (the role of technology in physical activity)
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Paper 1: Factors affecting participation in physical activity and sport
- 2 hour written exam
- 35% of A Level
Paper 2: Factors affecting optimal performance in physical activity and sport
- 2 hour written exam
- 35% of A Level
Non-exam assessment: Practical performance in physical activity and sport
- Performance and written assessment
- Internally assessed, externally moderated by AQA
- 30% of A Level
Entry requirements
Students should have studied Physical Education and / or Sport Studies at GCSE, achieving at least a Grade 6 (or equivalent).
Grades in Science will be reviewed, due to the Scientific content of the Anatomy and Physiology units. Again, a Grade 6 in Science will be required.
For those who have not studied Physical Education and / or Sports Studies at GCSE, may be considered providing you have a keen interest in physical activity and a Grade 6 in Science GCSE.
Equipment required
Practical PE kit (a Northstowe Sixth Form Sports Studies Kit will be available to purchase), Stationery and notetaking materials
