Teaching Assistant & Lunchtime Supervisor

  • Term time only

  • 8.30am to 2.00pm with half hour for lunch

  • 25 working hours per week

Purpose of the Role

To support the educational, social and emotional development of pupils by working closely with teaching staff and providing effective classroom assistance. The role also includes supervising pupils during the lunchtime period to ensure their safety, wellbeing and positive behaviour.

Reports to: Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher, SENCo and Class Teacher, as directed.

The following duties will be deemed to be included in the duties which you may be required to perform:

  • Child protection, discipline, health and safety. • Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people for whom you are responsible and with whom you come into contact.

Park School is committed to safeguarding children and all candidates will be subject to rigorous safeguarding procedures including pre-employment checks with the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Overview

Teaching Assistants are key personnel in helping the School achieve its aims and objectives. It is expected that all assistants will take great care to support not only the teacher, the School and the curriculum, but also each individual pupil.

The key element of a Teaching Assistant's role is to help promote effective teaching and learning throughout the School. To achieve this successfully, you must be able to generate confidence in children and inspire their trust.

Teaching Assistant Duties

Supporting Teaching and Learning • Assist the teacher in planning and delivering learning activities. • Support pupils in understanding lesson content and completing tasks. • Work with individuals and small groups to reinforce learning objectives. • Help prepare and organise classroom resources and teaching materials. • Promote pupil engagement and participation in learning activities.

Supporting Pupils • Provide support for pupils' educational, social, emotional and physical needs. • Encourage pupils' independence and confidence. • Support pupils with additional learning needs and disabilities where required. • Support pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in accordance with individual support plans where appropriate. • Help maintain a positive and inclusive learning environment. • Assist pupils in developing positive relationships with peers and adults.

Classroom Management • Support the teacher in maintaining good behaviour and classroom discipline. • Supervise pupils during classroom activities, educational visits and other school events. • Assist with the organisation and presentation of classroom displays. • Support the maintenance of a safe and stimulating learning environment.

Assessment and Record Keeping • Observe and monitor pupils' progress. • Provide feedback to teachers on pupils' achievement, behaviour and wellbeing. • Assist in maintaining accurate records as directed by the teacher. • Support assessment activities under the guidance of teaching staff.

Lunchtime Supervisor Duties

Supervise pupils during the lunchtime period in accordance with School policies and procedures.

Dining Hall Duties • Assist with the orderly entry and exit of pupils from the dining hall. • Encourage good table manners and appropriate behaviour during mealtimes. • Support younger pupils with food-related needs where appropriate. • Help maintain a clean and pleasant dining environment. • Respond to incidents and report concerns to relevant staff.

Playground and Outdoor Supervision • Supervise pupils during outdoor play and activities. • Encourage safe, active and cooperative play. • Monitor the playground for potential hazards and report any concerns.

Health, Safety and Welfare • Ensure pupils' safety at all times during the lunch break. • Provide first aid, where appropriately trained, in accordance with School procedures. • Follow safeguarding and child protection policies, reporting any concerns immediately. • Adhere to health and safety regulations and School procedures.

General Duties • Attend relevant training and staff meetings as required. • Work collaboratively with teaching staff and other support staff. • Assist with maintaining School standards of behaviour and wellbeing. • Carry out any other duties appropriate to the role as directed by the Senior Leadership Team.

Confidentiality

The post holder must maintain confidentiality regarding pupils, parents, staff and all School matters, in accordance with School policies and data protection requirements. Information acquired during the course of employment must not be disclosed to unauthorised persons.

Hours of Work

This is a term-time-only position. Attendance is required during published School term dates together with any staff training days (INSETS) and meetings reasonably required by the School.

General

This is not intended to be exhaustive. The duties and responsibilities may be varied from time to time to meet the changing needs of the School.

The post holder will work closely with teachers and other staff to promote pupils' academic, social and emotional development in accordance with the aims and values of the School.

Appropriate training, support and guidance will be provided to enable the post holder to fulfil the requirements of the role effectively.
