Locum Consultant Histopathologist | Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust

The newly appointed locum consultant would be part of a team of histopathology consultants who provide pathology reports on specimens received in-house from RNOH and also referred cases mainly from other hospitals based in the geography covered by the London Sarcoma Service. The reports are based on the interpretation of the microscopic features of tissue, the gross and/or radiological findings and currently available appropriate additional tests including immunohistochemistry, fluorescence in situ hybridisation, PCR-based tests and more recently on generation sequencing. There is an emphasis of reporting in the context of clinical information.

• The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the delivery of the RJAH SLA. This will involve being part of the rota and may involve travelling there and staying over for one night approximately 6-8 times per annum. The pathologist will be expected to attend the sarcoma MDT and the infection joint replacement MDT. Cases are also sent by post from RJAH and reported at RNOH.

• Whole genome sequencing (WGS) as standard of care for sarcomas was initiated in late 2020 by NHSE. The tissue samples are cut at RNOH and sent to Great Ormond Street Hospital where DNA is extracted, after which the sequencing is performed at the Illumina laboratory in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire. The successful candidate will be expected to help support this new pathway.

• The locum consultant will not be involved in private practice at RNOH.

• The appointee will be expected to fulfil the Royal College of Surgeons recommendations for CME/CPD as a minimum. Study leave is available in accordance with Trust policy.

• There is a Postgraduate Centre and well-equipped Library facilities at Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital which link to the UCL services. There are regular Audit meetings and a full programme of teaching for trainees.

• The appointee will commit to appraisal and revalidation and use the Trust revalidation software. The Trust will support the appointee in the appraisal and revalidation process.

• The postholder will be expected to provide professional supervision and management of doctors in training and laboratory staff and undertake some clinical teaching for medical students during their attachment to the department (a responsibility shared with the other consultants).

• The postholder will be expected to act as educational supervisor for training and non-training grade doctors working with them. This includes day-to-day supervision and teaching as well as active participation in objective setting, appraisal and assessment of junior medical staff. This may involve educational supervision training and support.

Consultants are encouraged to participate in delivering the range of courses for training grade doctors and for general practitioners, which are run in the Trust Postgraduate Centres and by the Deanery for pathologists
