We have the opportunity for a Biomedical Scientist in within the Endocrine Laboratory, Blood Sciences Department. Ideally you will already have HCPC Registration and have experience of working within an NHS Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory. The Endocrine Laboratory performs investigations for gut disorders, endocrine conditions, diabetes monitoring, tumour diagnosis and monitoring. We also are involved in the Prenatal Trisomy Screening Service.

Applications may be accepted from Trainee Biomedical Scientists who are completing their Registration Portfolio. Successful candidates without the appropriate qualifications will be paid on Band 4, until HCPC registration is completed. 

The successful candidate must be keen to learn and willing to contribute to our rapidly changing laboratory environment. This is a substantive post. Once trained, you will be required to work flexibly in reflection of service needs, at present this will include occasionally working into the evening.

Main duties of the job

• Undertake testing and processing of biological specimens.
• Entering of results into the hospital IT systems and communication of results to service users.
• To work flexibly in reflection of service needs this may include an extended working day and/or participation in delivery of a 24 hour, 7 days per week service.
• Supervise and/or train less experienced staff in own area of work and competency.
• The work of the service brings staff into constant contact with human body fluids, tissues and hazardous chemicals.  This may include blood, pus, urine, faeces, and respiratory secretions.
• Maintain and promote professional image of the Biomedical Science profession and Cambridge University Hospital’s Trust.

Interviews are due to be held on 30th September 2026. 

All appointments with a start date on or after 1 October 2026 will be subject to a 12-week probationary period. This provides a structured and supportive period to help you settle into your role, with regular reviews and feedback.

Essential criteria

HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist IBMS accredited Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent

Evidence of Continual Professional Development

Experience

Essential criteria

Practical experience of working in an NHS diagnostics laboratory.

Use of laboratory IT systems.

Desirable criteria

Use of EPIC IT system.

Able to use Microsoft office products (Excel/Word).

Knowledge

Theoretical knowledge of Biomedical Sciences gained through BSc or equivalent.
