Assistant Head of Languages with French and Spanish teaching

The Modern Foreign Languages department are looking to appoint an inspiring assistant head of languages to join a team who are committed to enabling students to become independent, life-long learners of languages. Hove Park School is located on two sites. The Valley Campus is for years 7, 8 and 6th form. The Nevill Campus is for years 9, 10 and 11.

The pastoral life of the school is very important, so you will have your own tutor group. We operate in Year Teams, but we have Houses that we use for Sports Day and other competitions.

We check progress regularly, so you will be keeping records of students’ learning journeys, which you will share with students, parents and carers.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate their willingness to support students of all abilities and to make French and Spanish accessible and fun, with particular emphasis on GCSE and fluency in spoken French and Spanish.

Key responsibilities – Teacher of French and Spanish

Student Outcomes

• To ensure that all assessment processes are accurate and credible by using appropriate moderation systems.

• To analyse and evaluate progress data and take swift and appropriate action in response to underachievement.

Developing Teaching and Learning

• To promote regular debate and discussion about the quality of teaching and learning and expectations for students’ achievements, encouraging the sharing and dissemination of good practice within the music team and with other areas.

• To ensure effective development of the use of new technologies in teaching and learning and music.

• To ensure the behaviour management procedures are implemented so that effective learning can take place.

• To ensure that schemes of work are followed.

• To ensure that regular and planned assessment opportunities are built into the scheme of work and that they support improved learning and progress.

Quality Assurance

• To enable, promote and encourage the sharing of good practice within the languages team.

• To demonstrate excellence in classroom practice.

Communication

• To ensure effective communication/consultation as appropriate with the parents of students.

• To communicate the work and success of the art team to the rest of the school and to parents and the wider community.

• Employees will be expected to comply with any reasonable request from a manager to undertake work of a similar level that is not specified in this .

Key responsibilities – Assistant Head of Languages

• support the Head of Languages in the strategic development of the department

• support the Head of Languages in the monitoring of learning and teaching across the department

• support curriculum development within the department with particular emphasis on relevant curriculum areas

  • support a culture and ethos of inclusion, challenge and support where all students can achieve success and become engaged in their learning

    • use a range of evidence, including national data and own school’s performance data, to support, monitor, evaluate and improve students’ outcomes in the curriculum area

    • challenge underperformance at all levels ensuring effective corrective action

    • implement and monitor the application of school policies within the curriculum area

    • keep up to date with national developments in the designated curriculum area, and with teaching practices and pedagogy

    • produce reports on examination performance for the curriculum area(s) of responsibility

    • promote teamwork and to motivate staff to ensure effective working relations

    • monitor learning and teaching in the curriculum area and ensure that Teacher Standards are maintained

    • act as a positive role model to other staff and assist SLT in promoting new initiatives within the school

    • undertake Appraisal Review(s) and to act as reviewer for staff within the designated subject areas

    • participate in the interview process for teaching posts when required and to ensure effective induction of new staff into the curriculum area

    • identify areas for staff development and ensure that the necessary provision of training is facilitated

    • ensure that staff development/training becomes a regular discussion point at meetings, through enabling staff to contribute to the development of others

    • co-operate across the department and with the support staff to ensure effective usage of resources to the benefit of the school and the students.

    • ensure appropriate provision is made for classes in curriculum area when staff are absent and support the head of faculty in making appropriate arrangements for classes when staff are absent across the faculty
