About Us

Rikkyo School in England is a fully boarding independent Japanese School for boys and girls aged 10-18 nestled in the countryside on the West Sussex/Surrey border. The school follows the Japanese curriculum with a GCSE in Science and a focus on developing British experiences.

Role

We are seeking a committed and reflective Teacher of English (EAL/EAP) to join our secondary school team at an independent Japanese boarding school in the UK, following the Japanese national curriculum.

The successful candidate will teach Key Stages 4 and 5, supporting students in developing high levels of English for communication and academic purposes, study skills, critical thinking and independent learning competencies in preparation for higher education. IELTS Academic preparation is central to the High School English programme and is supplemented by broader EAP and higher-level thinking skills.

Working within a culturally diverse Japanese school, the teacher will contribute collaboratively to curriculum delivery and English Department development. The ability to teach another subject would be an advantage.

Key Responsibilities

• Teach English to Senior Secondary School students aged 15–18, for whom English is an Additional Language, across a range of abilities.

• Deliver English for Academic Purposes (EAP), supporting students’ academic literacy, critical thinking and ability to engage with increasingly complex texts and ideas.

• Prepare students for IELTS Academic, including familiarity with assessment criteria and effective examination strategies.

• Teach and embed study skills, communication and higher-level thinking competencies that promote independent and lifelong learning.

• Plan, prepare and deliver engaging, inclusive lessons that reflect best practice in EAL/EAP pedagogy.

• Deliver sessions in an intensive pre-university program during our third term

• Monitor student progress, provide constructive feedback and maintain accurate assessment records.

• Contribute collaboratively to curriculum planning, assessment and the development of departmental materials and schemes of work.

• Work collaboratively with colleagues to support students’ academic and pastoral development and promote their welfare.

• Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and adaptability when working with students and families from diverse backgrounds.

• Contribute positively to the wider life of the school.

Essential Experience and Skills

Candidates must demonstrate:

• Experience teaching English in a secondary school setting.

• Proven experience teaching EAL learners across a range of abilities.

• Experience preparing students for IELTS Academic.

• Experience delivering English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and developing the academic literacy and critical thinking skills required for higher education.

• Experience embedding study skills and developing competencies that support independent and lifelong learning.

• The ability to plan, assess and deliver an appropriately challenging academic English programme.

• A collaborative and flexible approach, with a strong commitment to teamwork.

• Cultural awareness and the ability to work effectively within an intercultural school environment.

• QTS or an appropriate equivalent teaching qualification.

Desirable Experience and Skills

The following would be an advantage:

• Experience teaching overseas, particularly within a Japanese or international school environment.

• Experience teaching Japanese learners, ideally in Japan or within a Japanese school context.

• Experience of, or the ability to teach, Middle School EAL learners within a Cambridge English and CEFR-aligned programme.

• Experience developing curriculum materials and schemes of work.

• The skills, experience or qualifications to teach an additional subject in English, such as English Literature or History.
