Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Support the monitoring and investigation of groundwater and mine water systems across Great Britain
- Assist with collecting water samples and environmental data from sites
- Help inspect and maintain groundwater monitoring equipment
- Analyse environmental and geological data using specialist software and tools
- Support the interpretation of groundwater, geological and hydrogeological information
- Assist with the preparation of technical reports, maps and presentations
- Work alongside experienced hydrogeologists on environmental and mine water remediation projects
- Take part in site visits, fieldwork and investigations to understand groundwater conditions
- Contribute to projects that help protect water resources and the environment
- Gradually take ownership of your own work and projects as your skills and experience develop

Course contents- Integrate and critically evaluate information from different sources to test findings and hypotheses.
- Consider, appraise and inform ground related issues to multidisciplinary teams.
- Define complex geoscience related problems, a strategy to understand the problem and evaluate possible solutions. For example: resource scarcity, foundations, sustainability energy supply.
- Test geological models to inform and design investigations.
- Plan, conduct and present independent geoscientific projects with appropriate guidance.
- Consider inconsistencies and uncertainty and gaps in data when developing geological models.
- Apply geoscientific theories, paradigms, concepts and principles.
- Conduct and supervise fieldwork, geoscience mapping and laboratory investigations as appropriate and in accordance with safe working practices and legal requirements.
- Apply appropriate numerical, statistical, geostatistical and qualitative techniques in the evaluation of data and information.
- Utilise digital technologies, instrumentation and remote sensing for the collection, analysis and modelling of data.
- Communicate relevant geoscience insights to external stakeholders using different formats and media.
- Evaluate personal strengths and weaknesses and develop personal development goals.
- Plan and organise own workload and contribute to the completion of geoscientific projects.

Training schedule
You will complete the Level 6 Geoscientist Degree Apprenticeship with Keele University while working within our Technical Services team.
Training will be delivered through a combination of:
- On-the-job learning and practical experience at the Mining Remediation Authority
- Online and face-to-face teaching delivered by Keele University
- Block release attendance at Keele University, Keele, Staffordshire, ST5 5BG
- Independent study supported by both university tutors and workplace mentors
- You will receive dedicated support throughout the apprenticeship and will spend at least 20% of your working time on off-the-job training and study
More training information
The apprenticeship is delivered in partnership with Keele University over five years. Learning is structured through a combination of workplace experience, independent study and university attendance.
You will be supported by a dedicated workplace mentor and university tutor throughout the programme. University attendance will include a mixture of online learning, campus-based teaching and block release activities, scheduled in advance to support both study and work commitments.

Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- English Language (grade 4/C or above)
- Mathematics (grade 4/C or above)
A Level in:
- any Geology, Geography, Environmental Science, (grade 3 at grade BBB or above)
- or Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Math (grade BBB or above)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements
Willingness to travel across Great Britain for site visits, fieldwork and university attendance.
Ability to work outdoors in a range of weather conditions when undertaking fieldwork.
Must be able to meet the entry requirements for Keele University's Level 6 Geoscientist Degree Apprenticeship, including any qualification requirements set by the university.
A full UK driving licence would be advantageous but is not essential at the start of the apprenticeship.
Willingness to work towards obtaining a full UK driving licence during the apprenticeship.
