About the Role
Lead with Purpose. Champion Primary Education. Transform Outcomes.
Baston House School is a specialist school supporting pupils aged 5 to 19 with a range of additional and complex needs. While our provision spans this wider age range, the main focus of this Deputy Headteacher position will be our Primary aged pupils, providing strong leadership that ensures their learning, development and individual needs remain at the heart of our practice.
We’re looking for an experienced and inspirational Deputy Headteacher who understands the importance of getting those early foundations right. Working alongside the Headteacher and senior leadership team, you’ll have significant influence across Primary provision, helping shape teaching and learning, behaviour and attitudes, staff development and pupil outcomes.
This is a visible leadership role for someone who combines strategic thinking with a genuine understanding of pupils with complex needs. You’ll work closely with education, therapy, clinical and pastoral colleagues to create an ambitious and nurturing environment where pupils can develop academically, socially and emotionally.
What You’ll Do:
You’ll play a key role in the strategic and operational leadership of Baston House School, with a particular focus on our Primary aged pupils and provision.
You’ll:
- Support the Headteacher in delivering the school’s vision, values and strategic priorities
- Provide strong leadership across Primary provision, maintaining ambitious expectations for teaching, learning and pupil progress
- Lead on behaviour and attitudes, embedding positive and consistent approaches across the school
- Monitor pupil progress, outcomes and individual targets, using this information to identify priorities and drive improvement
- Work collaboratively with education, therapy, clinical and pastoral colleagues to ensure pupils receive coordinated and individualised support
- Support admissions and transitions, helping ensure pupils receive the right provision from the beginning
- Line manage, coach and develop colleagues through supervision, appraisal and professional development
- Lead and promote effective safeguarding practice, ensuring pupil welfare remains paramount
- Contribute to quality assurance, staff training, compliance and school improvement
- Ensure practice reflects relevant SEND legislation, regulatory standards and school policies
- Develop positive and productive relationships with families, carers and external professionals
What We’re Looking For:
We’re looking for a leader who understands Primary education as well as the complexity of specialist provision.
You’ll need:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
- Significant experience supporting pupils with SEND and complex needs
- Strong experience and understanding of working with Primary aged pupils
- Successful leadership experience within a school or specialist educational setting
- A strong understanding of inclusive teaching, behaviour support and individualised approaches to learning
- The ability to use pupil progress and outcomes to inform improvement and maintain high expectations
- Experience of motivating, coaching and developing colleagues
- Strong leadership, communication and relationship building skills
- The resilience and confidence to provide visible leadership within a complex educational environment
- A collaborative approach to working with education, therapy, clinical and pastoral professionals
- A commitment to safeguarding and achieving the best possible outcomes for every pupil
