Job description
Job Purpose
Deliver a high-quality, referral-level Diagnostic Imaging service (MRI, CT, scintigraphy, radiography and ultrasound) with primary emphasis on equine and other large animals, and an ability to contribute to small-animal imaging where service needs require. Provide research-led education for undergraduates, interns and residents; contribute to clinical research/scholarship; and support the strategic expansion of imaging capability within the Equine Hospital and across the School.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical
1. Provide specialist imaging reporting and image-guided procedures for equine and other large-animal cases (standing and GA MRI; CT; scintigraphy; digital radiography; musculoskeletal and abdominal/thoracic ultrasound) and contribute to small-animal imaging as appropriate.
2. Lead protocol optimisation, QA and dose/contrast stewardship; develop novel applications/ workflows that enhance diagnostic yield and case throughput.
3. Participate in the out-of-hours rota for urgent imaging consults/procedures (equine emergencies, neuro/orthopaedic trauma), ensuring appropriate supervision of interns/residents.
4. Provide mentorship to imaging staff and clinical scholars; coordinate case rounds and morbidity/improvement meetings linked to clinical audit.
5. Build strong links with Surgery, Medicine, Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation, and Anaesthesia to deliver integrated, efficient patient pathways.
6. Maintain CPD and compliance with College/RCVS standards and contribute to promotional and client/referrer- facing activities for the service.
Teaching
7. Plan and deliver imaging teaching (rounds, practicals, seminars) to undergraduates; provide structured training and feedback to interns and residents; contribute to assessment and OSCEs/board-prep activities.
8. Innovate in teaching methods and contribute to quality enhancement across programmes.
9. Engage in the delivery of a range of assessment activities and engage fully in the examination process as appropriate, (using a variety of methods and techniques) and provide effective, timely and appropriatefeedback to students to support learning.
Research/Scholarship
10. Collaborate in clinical investigations and evidence-based medicine of an external reputation and develop a consistent output of publications in high quality refereed clinical journals and/or textbooks.
11. Attend and participate in national/international events/research seminars/conferences within the service area.
Administration
12. Contribute to service administration, rota planning, equipment governance, and safety/QA documentation; participate in performance and development reviews and help enhance the School’s national/international profile.
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
A1 Veterinary degree registerable with RCVS.
A2 Completion of recognised residency training programme.
For appointment at Grade 8:
A3 ECVDI Diploma or RCVS CertAVP in Large Animal Diagnostic Imaging.
A4 Knowledge and or experience of implementing and running your own residency program.
Desirable
B1 PhD (or other evidence of research training).
B2 Hold a relevant teaching qualification.
Skills
Essential:
C1 High standard of communication skills both orally and written.
C2 Ability to work as part of a team.
C3 Competence across the field, corresponding to training and qualifications, and ability to provide expert advice to clinicians, external veterinary surgeons, research bodies and organisations.
C4 Self-motivated, able to plan for contingencies and think strategically.
C5 Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
C6 A high standard of communication skills, both oral and written.
For appointment at Grade 8:
C7 Expertise across the field, corresponding to training and qualifications, and ability to provide expert advice to clinicians, external veterinary surgeons, research bodies and organisations.
C8 Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to provide leadership.
C9 Ability to supervise PGR and residency students.
Desirable
D1 High standard of presentation skills.
D2 Understanding and experience of databases and other IT applications/ packages.
D3 Leadership of a clinical or teaching team.
Experience
Essential
E1 Experience in referral large animal diagnostic imaging.
E2 Evidence of clinical publications.
For appointment at Grade 8:
E3 Extensive experience in referral large animal diagnostic imaging.
E4 An established reputation as an advanced clinician in large animal diagnostic imaging.
E5 Teaching experience relevant to the HE sector.
E6 A track record of clinical research publications.
E7 Record of award of competitive grant funding for clinical research.
Desirable
F1 Teaching or training experience at undergraduate level.
F2 Setting up/and or running a specialist clinic.
F3 Evidence of peer reviewing scholarly outputs.
Note: Candidates having completed a recognised residency training programme and Board-eligible would be appointed at Grade 7 and will be promoted to Grade 8 immediately upon passing the Board exams. Candidates with suitable relevant experience will be considered for appointment at Grade 7.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7/8, £41,064 - £46,049/£50,253 - £58,225 per annum pro rata, plus generous clinical supplement and out-of-hours allowance.
This post is part time, 17.50 hours per week and fixed term for up to 3 years.
