Safeguarding Officer | Voluntary Aided School | Birmingham
CORE PURPOSE
We require an exceptionally grounded, resilient, and vigilant safeguarding specialist to lead our child protection and student welfare operations. The role involves acting as the primary authority on all safeguarding cases, enforcing statutory safety frameworks, and orchestrating targeted interventions alongside external multi-agency child protection partners.
KEY TASKS & DAILY OPERATIONS
Statutory Casework & Oversight: Lead the school’s response to all child protection, safety, and welfare concerns, ensuring immediate action is taken in strict compliance with statutory guidelines and national policy frameworks.
Multi-Agency Collaboration: Act as the principal point of contact for Birmingham Children's Trust, social care services, police, and mental health teams, actively preparing reports and leading the school's contribution at formal Child Protection and Child in Need planning conferences.
Systems & Record Keeping: Maintain meticulous, highly confidential, and legally compliant digital safeguarding records via specialized tracking systems, ensuring all disclosures, chronology mapping, and intervention actions are logged flawlessly.
Staff Training & Advisory: Plan and deliver robust safeguarding updates and induction training to all teaching and support staff, ensuring the entire workforce remains sharp on modern risk indicators, peer-on-peer abuse protocols, and radicalization awareness.
Vulnerable Cohort Monitoring: Track the academic progress, attendance profiles, and emotional wellbeing of looked-after children (LAC), young carers, and students on active care plans, conducting direct, supportive check-ins with families under pressure.
ENVIRONMENT & STRUCTURE
Voluntary Aided Framework: Operating within a supportive Voluntary Aided framework, our school benefits from a dedicated governing body and close ties to local foundation trusts, fostering a values-driven community focused heavily on holistic care, inclusivity, and student equity.
Behaviour Systems: The campus implements highly consistent, school-wide behaviour routines that maintain a quiet, respectful, and orderly atmosphere, ensuring vulnerable students feel entirely secure, insulated, and supported in a highly predictable daily environment.
PROFILE REQUIREMENTS
Experience: Extensive professional experience managing complex child protection, safeguarding, or social care cases within an educational setting, youth service, or multi-agency welfare framework.
Expert Knowledge: Deep, working literacy in statutory frameworks, including the latest Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) regulations and working practices established by local safeguarding children boards.
Interpersonal Resilience: Absolute emotional resilience, sharp critical judgment, and an authoritative yet deeply compassionate communication style capable of managing high-stakes crises and sensitive familial disclosures under intense pressure.
REGIONAL CONTEXT
Metropolitan Scope: Based in Birmingham, the school serves a highly diverse, vibrant, and multi-cultural metropolitan population, navigating the unique socio-economic challenges and rich community dynamics of the UK's second city.
Connectivity: Situated within a major midlands transit network, the location offers exceptional local commuter infrastructure, with rapid cross-city bus links and direct rail corridors running straight through New Street and Moor Street stations.
