Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to continue the academic collaboration between Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and Professor Gina Brown, Chair of Gastrointestinal Imaging at Imperial College London. Available from 7 October 2026 , this post offers an ST3+ trainee the opportunity to undertake colorectal research whilst maintaining clinical and endoscopic skills within a busy colorectal unit. The successful candidate will work under the academic supervision of Professor Gina Brown and the clinical supervision of Mr Arnold Goede. The post builds on the success of previous fellows who have supported NIHR studies, secured grant funding and presented research nationally and internationally. Fellows will contribute to colorectal imaging research and receive support from both the BHT Research & Innovation Department and the Imperial College GI Clinical Trials Team. The role combines research, colorectal surgery, lower GI endoscopy, medical student teaching, cancer pathway clinics and Lynch Syndrome services. Clinical activity includes outpatient clinics, endoscopy, and laparoscopic and robotic colorectal surgery. Applicants should have a strong interest in colorectal surgery and research, excellent communication skills and ideally hold JAG accreditation in lower GI endoscopy. The post is expected to contribute towards a higher degree and offers excellent academic and clinical development opportunities. Main duties of the job
Please see attached JD for overall timetable, On average, 40 PA per 4 weeks, 10 per week average, 6 DCC, 1.5 SPA, 1.5 Research, 1.0 Education The job role is flexible and LGI FDS and Clinical Sessions can be arranged to optimise research time (within reason and with adequate notice). Sessions are annualised. The endoscopy unit (based across two sites, Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville) is staffed by experienced gastroenterologists, colorectal and upper GI surgeons, and advanced nurse endoscopists. The Colorectal Unit in Buckinghamshire Healthcare consists of five full time colorectal surgeons providing all aspects of elective colorectal specialisms, including colorectal and anal cancer surgery, with a very high proportion of these being performed laparoscopically, and since 2022 also robotically. Our colorectal cancer surgeons are amongst the highest volume surgeons in NBOCA, with excellent outcomes. We work closely with our Gastroenterologists in a well-functioning IBD MDT. Further services include colorectal Pelvic Floor Surgery (linked to St Marks Hospital Pelvic Floor MDT), surgery for Spinal Cord Injury patients on the National Spinal Injuries Unit, and a multi-speciality Complex Abdominal Wall Repair and Perineal Hernia MDT, alongside our Plastic Surgery Department. TAMIS for large rectal polyps and early rectal cancer is performed by Mr Goede and Mr El-Khani. This post is primarily with Mr Goede and Mr El-Khani and therefore mostly robotic, with significant laparoscopic and TAMIS work, and also includes spinal and pelvic floor speciality work. - Experience at ST3+ level of General Surgery
- Ability to manage surgical patients as the senior surgical opinion on site
- Clinical and technical skills appropriate to the grade ST3+
- Special Clinical interest in Colorectal Surgery
- Evidence of recent audit
- Good grasp of audit methodology, and practice of Clinical Governance
- Ability to conduct complex telephone consultations to high standard
- Accredited or close to (6 months) achieving accreditation in lower GI endoscopy (200 JETS recorded and signed off colonoscopy procedures)
- Ability to provide clinical education of surgical skills and patient management to undergraduate medical students
- Good grasp of clinical research, ethics, statistics and literature review, and ability to acquire these skills to high standard
