Ship Based

Small bespoke ships and unique itineraries... is this what you’re looking for? Then we are looking for you. Join the Fred. Olsen family and lead an excellent team delivering an outstanding service whilst travelling the world

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is a family run company, well known for our quality cruises and the ‘personal’ touch we offer our guests. We believe the journey is just as important as the destination.

The role

As second-in-command, you’ll lead the Deck Department and be the Master’s principal deputy. That includes coaching Navigation and Safety Officers and the Bosun/deck crew; setting and sustaining bridge management standards; oversight of passage planning; and serving as stability officer - providing positive stability reports and maintaining vessel integrity. You’ll supervise deck stores and CAPEX requisitions, ensure disciplined, CBA-aligned people management, and stay fully prepared for damage-control and incident response, including investigations with Medical, Safety and Security teams.

Key accountabilities

At Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, we are committed to fostering a supportive, respectful, and inclusive environment for all our crew and guests. We value each individual’s unique contribution and promote a culture built on trust, open communication, and mutual respect. Our leadership is dedicated to fair and transparent practices, supporting the professional and personal development of every team member. We believe that a positive workplace is the foundation for delivering exceptional service, and we encourage collaboration, celebrate diversity, and ensure everyone’s wellbeing at sea and ashore. At FOCL, people come first-always. With this in mind, you will:

  • Lead, mentor and appraise Deck personnel; upholding safe manning and BRM on every watch.
  • Take responsibility for stability, ballast and voyage readiness prior to every departure and throughout the voyage.
  • Take ownership of deck safety & security equipment oversight, inventories and purchasing workflows.
  • Drive incident prevention and investigations; embed continuous improvement.

About you

  • You can demonstrate success as Staff Captain/Chief Officer on passenger ships.
  • You hold an unlimited Master’s license.
  • You can demonstrate excellent situational leadership and communication in English.
  • You have proven ship handling experience, preferably with both prop and azipod.
  • You have a coaching approach to leadership that raises standards across navigation, safety and guest-facing reliability.

What we offer

  • Small-ship seafaring with meaningful responsibility and visible impact.
  • A supportive culture and clear pathway toward command for the right candidate.
  • Competitive package with a 2:2 work rotation of two months on board with two month’s leave

We do not charge candidates any referral fee
