Job summary
The Post of Charge Nurse at Riverdale Grange is a nursing Team Leader role. The Charge Nurse acts to support the Ward Manager in ensuring the delivery of excellence in the care and treatment of patients with eating disorders and their families. The post holder is accountable to the ward manager and will assume the duties of the ward manager in their absence. The charge nurse is responsible for ensuring the delivery of clinical standards of care in line with clinical strategy. This post requires a person with drive and commitment who is able to deliver and sustain change in the pursuit of patient centred, quality, care. The post of charge nurse will support, teach, and lead nurses and support workers in cohesive and empathic approaches with patients which promote recovery and independence.

Main duties of the job
Role Context:
The post holder will work as a member of the multidisciplinary team within either the Adolescent or Adult mental health service. They will be responsible for delivering a high standard of nursing care to patients and their families. The post holder will demonstrate empathic understanding, compassion and positive regard in maintaining the ethos of the ward and values of the hospital.

The basis of the role will be to lead the nursing team in the development and maintenance of a therapeutic environment which supports patients in making positive changes. As part of a multidisciplinary team the post holder will support and uphold a recovery focussed structured programme of treatment.

Job responsibilities
Clinical or Work Practice
  • To assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care with patients.
  • To be the named nurse for identified patients.

  • To co-ordinate, encourage and facilitate patients to participate in the structured treatment programme maximising opportunities of recovery.

  • Act as nurse in charge of shift ensuring that the team work within hospital policies and procedures and uphold the organisational values.

  • To provide support and work closely with the Ward Manager bringing to their attention any matters that they should be aware of e.g. changes to patients presentation incidents/accidents etc.

  • To manage duty rotas, managing staff absences, to maintain staffing at an acceptable level.
  • To ensure patients families/carers are treated in a courteous manner at all times; ensure that they are aware of the Carers standards and that they feel fully supported by the team.

Teaching, Training & Supervision
  • To actively engage in monthly clinical supervision with Ward Manager.
  • To develop skills in the area of clinical supervision.
  • To provide clinical supervision for junior staff and students.
  • To actively engage in the appraisal process.
  • To continue to gain knowledge, skills and experience in accordance with professional practice guidelines to enhance overall clinical care for patients.
  • Actively engage in formal and informal training opportunities to develop and maintain skills and knowledge and ensure fitness for practice.
  • Seek out and engage in opportunities for learning within the team, participating in group forums/clinical meetings.
  • Adhere to essential and statutory training requirement.
  • Act as a role model for all nursing staff displaying a high standard of professionalism and clinical governance.
  • Participate in staff meetings/ chair staff meetings in ward managers absence.
  • Provide clinical supervision to members of the nursing team.
  • To facilitate live supervision and training to junior staff in order to help develop and support their practice.
Audit, Outcome Measuring & Service Evaluation
  • To be responsible for auditing CQC standards and other best practice standards communicating the results back through the team and developing action plans to address deficit.
  • To participate in audit, outcome measurement and development projects occurring within the hospital.
  • Engage within the governance strategy.
  • Utilise theory, evidence-based literature and research to support practice.
  • Oversee the professional/clinical work of nursing staff and ensure that individual patient care is to the highest standard adhering to the NMC Code of Conduct and CQC regulatory standards.
  • Support and contribute to the development of action plans from audit and disseminate changes.
  • Actively contribute to the development of service.
  • Participate and implement quality initiatives to promote the highest standard of care.
  • To support the ward manager in the continuous development of the eating disorders service, to ensure and sustain best practice.
  • To work in innovative and creative ways to drive practice.
  • To be a highly competent, knowledgeable and visible practitioner ensuring the provision of high quality care and treatment for patients and their families.
Policies & Procedures
  • Understand and adhere to the hospital policies, procedures and ensure that others also adhere to these.

Additional Duties

DIMENSIONS
  • Riverdale Grange Hospital provides a service to 9 adolescent patients and 9 adult patients who may detained under the Mental Health Act (1983) or undergoing treatment on a voluntary basis.
  • The post-holder will be required to work as a registered nurse within an MDT across the eating disorder service.
  • The post holder will be required to lead a team within a shift context, managing the ward in the absence of the ward manger.
  • The post-holder will join the MDT and will be required to provide support and supervision to junior staff, as agreed with the Senior Management Team. Number of staff supervised/managed: Variable according to experience
  • Budget responsible for: Nil
  • Clinical caseload: Variable depending on occupancy and acuity.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
  • Registered Nurse Mental Health with a current registration with the NMC.
  • Experience of Multi-disciplinary and multi-agency within Mental Health services.
  • Experience of working with relatives and carers.
  • Experience of and ability to manage resources/a team in delivering patient care.
  • Experience of and ability to facilitate clinical Supervision.
  • Experienced in risk assessment and management.
