The Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities. Interns must be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience.

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;

b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or

c) are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.

d) are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.

e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

Background Information

The Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) has been the International Organization for Migration's (IOM) main operational tool for tracking and monitoring the movements and evolving needs of displaced populations since 2004. It has been systematically deployed in medium- to large-scale humanitarian response operations in the last five years, including in all Level 3 emergencies. As of December 2024, DTM has been active in 91 countries, monitoring over 57.3 million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

Located in the IOM London office, under direct supervision of the DTM Data Officer (London, UK), the successful candidate will integrate into the DTM AKO unit. The AKO unit of the global DTM support team is tasked with direct support to country and regional offices to ensure that the quality of analytic outputs is maintained in line with the global DTM standards, and are fit for purpose based on the audience and information needs at the country level. The AKO unit is also engaged in exploring the analytic potential of DTM data through thematic workstreams including climate and natural hazard induced mobility, and displacement/migration, urban displacement/migration, data science and ethics and the humanitarian, development and peace nexus.

This position will be based within the London team and will be focused on supporting the quality control structures for DTM analytic outputs worldwide (analysis and reporting) as well as contributing to the global level thematic workstreams. For this position, fluency in English and French is required (oral and written).

Responsibilities

Learning Objectives:

1. DTM Methodologies and Data Collection Approaches

Objective: Develop a detailed understanding of the four methodological components of DTM data collection and how they are implemented in the field. Learn how data collection approaches impact the data that is collected and how that data should be analyzed.

1. Data Analysis and Reporting

Objective: Become proficient in preparing analysis and drafting reports on operational human mobility data for operational audiences implementing programs. Learn how to prepare advocacy data points for senior management and other audiences.

1. Country and Regional Response Context

Objective: Develop a detailed understanding of the humanitarian, and post crisis response in DTM countries and how data supports interventions.

Key Results : To provide operational reporting support to DTM Country and Regional offices.

Common to all interns in the AKO unit:

• Provide support in analysis and interpretation of data, as tasked bythe DTM AKO unit
• Facilitate the logistical organization ofwebinars in supportof the DTM unit to ensure regular
  internal and external updates on human mobility and displacement;
• If necessary, in coordination with DTM Country Missions provide updates on human mobility trends, changes and any other significant observations surrounding human mobilityand displacement in the respective context;
• Assist the DTM Country Missions and teams in London in the production and quality control of
  documents ;
• Coordinate with other units of the globalDTM support team to ensurecontinuity of functional workflows;
• Provide administrative and logistical support to the London teamwhen needed;
• Provide support in analysis and interpretation of data as well as in review of DTM documents requiring remote assistance to DTM Missions, at their request;
• Assist in the refinement of DTM's datacollection methodologies and questionnaires, identifying good practices and providing recommendations for improvement;
• Support technical training of other staff, including throughthe organization of dedicated webinars;

Qualifications

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

• Master's degree from an accredited academic institution in a field of study related to Economics / Development Economics, Data Science, Political Science, Social Science, Development Studies, Public health, Epidemiology or other relevant disciplines with a significant quantitative component. Alternatively, a bachelor's/undergraduate degree in the abovementioned fields with demonstrable relevant workingexperience.

Experience

Required:

• Experience drafting analytic outputs
• Experience in quantitative research methods

Advantageous:

• Experience or demonstrable interest in one or more of the global thematic workstreams.
• Experience organizing webinars, training sessions and other events
• Experience working with R (programming language), including at least three of the following
• Experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS/QGIS
• Experience with other coding languages (e.g. Python) and relational databases

Skills

• Proficiency using Microsoft Office 365 (Excel, Word and PowerPoint)
• Experience in qualitative research methods
• Experience using data visualization and publication software such as the Adobe suite (Illustrator and InDesign)

Languages

For this internship, fluency in English and French is required (oral and written).

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Notes

Depending on experience and location, interns are granted a small monthly stipend to help offset costs. Interns benefiting from an internship allowance or scholarship granted by their university or other sponsoring body that includes financial remuneration or credits for coursework will not be eligible for the stipend.

IOM covers Interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the internship. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
