Introduction to the department
The IT & Digital department is responsible for the force’s adoption and use of information and digital technology.
The department consists of three core functions as follows:
Architecture Management (responsible for identifying and selecting the right technologies for the force)
Delivery Management (responsible for delivering and implementing the right technologies for the force)
Service Management (responsible for managing and maintaining all live, operational technology for the force)
Outline of the role
West Midlands Police have completed a large-scale digital transformation programme, and therefore technologies such as Cloud, Artificial Intelligence, Automation and Mobility are no longer visionary – they underpin policing today. The next stage in our technology ambition is focused on the concept of Synergy and delivering amazing User Experiences. This role will help focus and shape our path in the Synergy strategy – and thus drive real-world impact on policing technology, therefore allowing us to excel at our vision; to prevent crime, protect the public and help those in need.
The role of Technical Architect is responsible for all infrastructure aspects of the Architecture Management function. The post holder will provide effective infrastructure elements of solution design and maintain suitable documentation that fully describes the Technical Architecture within the force. The role will define and govern how technical infrastructure is designed, configured and put to use within WMP and particularly within technology solution. Taking responsible for ensuring core infrastructure is scalable, resilient and cost effective and fit for purpose.
The postholder will be expected to manage and maintain the Technical Architecture blueprint for the force.
Key Responsibilities
- Design Solutions: Propose, define and articulate the impact of new Force infrastructure design for customer solutions and ensure projects deliver integrated within WMP
- Govern Standards: Define, manage, and govern infrastructure standards, capabilities, and technical documentation.
- Evaluate and Impact Assess: Participate in impact assessments and review operational systems or new initiatives for technical risks.
- Align and Consult: Use architecture to guide programmes, provide consultancy, and engage with stakeholders and suppliers
- Review Legislation and Trends: Monitor new legislation, commercial developments, and technical trends to shape future IT strategies
