Job summary
We care for patients with acute surgical conditions, who are admitted either to the Surgical Admissions Unit or the Same Day Emergency Clinic. We admit patients under the following specialities: Upper and Lower Gastrointestinal, Urology, Vascular, Renal, Plastics and occasionally Breast. The post holder will be responsible for assessment, planning, provision, maintenance, and evaluation of patient care, rotating between both clinical areas. The post holder will be required to enhance clinical skills required for acute surgical nursing; this will include venepuncture, cannulation, male catheterisation, stoma care, bowel management, complex wound dressings, nasogastric tube insertion, management of PICC lines, syringe drivers and PCA's. The post holder will take responsibility for the supervision and guidance of other staff including health care support workers and students daily. The post holder will be required to be enthusiastic and dynamic, ensuring a high standard of patient care in a busy, fast paced environment. The post holder will be required to work long days (07:00 - 19:30), nights (19:00 - 07:30), Long Twilights (11:00-23:00), Short Twilights (17:00-23:30) and weekend shifts. Main duties of the job

- To have achieved a recognised teaching & assessing qualification.
- Completion of training for additional clinical skills required in the ward/department
- Green card training for the use of pumps or machinery relevant to the ward or department.
- Evidence of attendance at mandatory training appropriate to the role.
- Competence in the use of computers and electronic communication systems or expectation to develop existing skills further as the needs of the service dictate.
- Evidence of an ability to critically appraise and utilise research to maintain and improve patient care.
- Sound knowledge of health promotion issues to ensure junior staff, patients and carers are provided with education, support and advice as required.
- Evidence of experience and knowledge of the importance of resource management including protocols for staff utilisation, equipment, and products for clinical care.
- Organise and participate in the delivery of high standard, evidence-based nursing care.

- Registered Nurse, with current live NMC registration / Student awaiting pin
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Teaching and assessing qualification or willing to undertake after 2 years post registration (secured a position on this type of course)

- Completion of training for extended roles required by the ward / department. i.e. IV drug administration, Cannulation, venepuncture, ECGs, male catheterisation, PCA and Epidural training
- At least 12 months recent experience as a Registered Nurse in either an acute hospital setting, surgical setting, admission/ emergency setting OR a qualifying student who has completed a placement within surgery or an admissions unit

- Advanced communication skills, verbal & written, to include report writing and record keeping
- Excellent interpersonal skills with patients and multidisciplinary team
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Basic computer / IT skills and expectation to develop these in line with the needs of the service i.e. IHS, Acis, Email use.
