Senior Support Worker (Nights)

We are looking for people who want to be part of a passionate and person-centred team to support 15 young people who are supported by the local authority as looked after/leaving care/unaccompanied asylum seeking children.. You will provide emotional, social and practical support to help them develop independence and look forward to a brighter future.

You will work professionally within our own dedicated support team, as well as with other relevant local agencies, such as children’s services,, health providers, legal services and other relevant services who can support our young people to to promote independence, education, employment and training opportunities so that our young people achieve the best possible outcomes in their lives.

You will also work with our own youth work team who provide a range of youth work activities, including sports to young people living in Newcastle upon Tyne.

We encourage and listen to young people to have a voice to help shape the support we provide them, to share our service as a whole and to ensure we meet their needs.

About the role

As a Senior Support Worker, you will take responsibility for the smooth running of the night shift when staffing levels are limited. You will provide guidance and direction to the Assistant Support Worker on shift and work closely with the wider team to ensure young people receive consistent and personalised support.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Supporting young people with a range of needs and aspirations, including those who may require support overnight.

• Responding appropriately and safely to emergencies and crises during the night.

• Ensuring safeguarding procedures are followed and young people remain safe.

• Being familiar with individual support plans, risk assessments and agreed goals.

• Supporting young people to develop independent living skills and prepare for move-on.

• Completing and maintaining accurate records, including daily updates, support plans and risk assessments.

• Overseeing night-shift tasks and ensuring they are completed to a high standard.

• Monitoring CCTV and completing regular patrols to maintain the safety and security of the service.

• Completing daily and weekly health and safety checks, including fire safety and emergency lighting checks.

• Reporting repairs and responding appropriately to emergency maintenance issues.

• Supporting tenancy and accommodation-related matters.

• Working collaboratively with day staff and external agencies to ensure continuity of support.

• Giving direction and support to the Assistant Support Worker during the night.

• The role requires someone who can remain calm under pressure, use sound judgement and work confidently when there are limited staff on site.

About you

• Experienced in supporting young people to thrive and achieve their potential.
• Able to build positive, trusting and professional relationships with young people.
• A confident communicator with excellent listening skills.
• Organised and able to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
• Comfortable maintaining accurate records and using IT systems.
• Able to work effectively as part of a small team and provide direction when required.
• Understanding of safeguarding and child protection practice.
• Understanding of the challenges faced by young people living independently and the impact of trauma.
• Committed to equality, inclusion and anti-discriminatory practice.
• Emotionally resilient and able to work effectively under pressure.
• Open, friendly, non-judgemental and professionally curious.

Essential requirements

• Experience of working with young people is essential.
• Experience within supported accommodation, supported housing, with looked-after children or care leavers, and experience of support delivery would be particularly valuable.

You should also have a good understanding of safeguarding, health and safety, risk management and the support needs of young people.
