SEND Tutor, EOTAS, Section 19 and AP Outreach - Birmingham
£30 - £40 per hourEmployed (PAYE) or self-employed, in the home, the community and schools. Always open View phone number on tes.com Ridwana Begum
We're always recruiting experienced SEND Tutors for EOTAS, section 19 and alternative provision (AP) outreach across Birmingham. Referrals reach us regularly from local authorities and schools, so we're building a team of tutors who can start as soon as safer recruitment checks are complete.
EOTAS means Education Other Than At School. Section 19 refers to a local authority's duty to arrange suitable education for children who cannot attend school, for example because of illness or other reasons. In both, we provide one-to-one education, usually at home or in the community.
AP outreach is support that a school commissions for a learner who is struggling to stay engaged in school or is at risk of missing education. It complements the school's own support and does not replace it. We work closely with the school and share regular, factual reports. Sessions may take place in the community, at home or on school premises, depending on what suits the learner and the school.
What this work is like
We want you to know this before you apply, so that you can decide whether it suits you.
Many of the learners we support have been out of school for some time or are finding school difficult. They may be anxious, find everyday demands very hard or have had difficult experiences of education. Progress often starts with trust, not teaching.
Some sessions may not go ahead as planned if a learner doesn't feel able to take part. We explain how this affects your hours and pay before you start. You'll be supported by our Case Coordinator and wider team throughout.
Key details:
Contract: Employed (PAYE) or self-employed, depending on your preference
Pay: £30.00 to £40.00 per hour, depending on experience
Location: Learners' homes, the community and school settings, across Birmingham
Hours: These vary by referral. Packages range from a few hours a week to larger packages. We match you with learners who fit your availability and experience
Support: Our Case Coordinator and wider team
Start date: Rolling recruitment. This vacancy is always open, so there's no closing date
What you'll be doing:
Building a trusting, consistent relationship with each learner
Delivering flexible, personalised education around each learner's Individual Learning Plan
Working at the learner's pace and adapting or pausing a session when needed
Writing a short, factual report after every session
Working with families, schools and local authorities and attending reviews where needed
Reporting any safeguarding concern immediately
How we work:
Before sessions begin, we complete a risk assessment and an Individual Learning Plan, plus a home visit assessment where sessions are at home. This supports both the learner and you
This is an education role. You don't offer therapy, counselling or treatment
For sessions at home, a responsible adult is always within earshot
You communicate with learners only through approved channels
If a session is ever online, you keep your own camera on throughout
Safeguarding responsibilities
This role involves regular, direct one-to-one contact with children, so it is in regulated activity. You'll need an enhanced DBS certificate, including a check of the children's barred list, along with our full safer recruitment checks before starting. No one begins work with any of our learners, supervised or otherwise, until these checks are complete.
In practice, this means:
Following our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy at all times
Reporting any concern about a learner's welfare immediately to our Designated Safeguarding Lead
Keeping safeguarding and Prevent training current throughout your time with us
Our commitment to safeguarding
Love2Learn Education is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. We expect everyone who works with us to share that commitment.
We support children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities, many of whom are vulnerable. Their safety and wellbeing come before everything else we do.
We follow safer recruitment practice throughout our recruitment process, in line with statutory guidance including Keeping Children Safe in Education and Working Together to Safeguard Children. In practice this means:
We ask for a full application form rather than a CV alone, so that we have a complete employment history
We ask about any gaps in employment history and explore them at interview. This is routine and applies to every candidate
We ask shortlisted candidates to complete a self-declaration about their suitability to work with children before interview
We take up references before appointment and ask referees directly about suitability to work with children
We verify identity, right to work and qualifications. We carry out an enhanced DBS check before any appointment is confirmed
We carry out an online search on shortlisted candidates, covering publicly available information only, as recommended by statutory guidance. Anything that arises will be discussed with you
We include questions about safeguarding at interview for every post, whatever the role
Our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy is published on our website and available on request. Our Designated Safeguarding Lead is the Principal, supported by a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead. All staff complete safeguarding training appropriate to their role.
If you would like to talk through any part of this before applying, please contact us. We would much rather have a conversation than have someone decide not to apply because they were unsure.
What we're looking for
We'll ask for specific, concrete examples of the following at interview.
Essential:
Experience teaching or supporting children or young people with SEND, SEMH needs or anxiety-related school avoidance
A patient, flexible and relationship-first approach
Confident adapting your approach and working at the learner's pace
Comfortable when sessions don't go to plan
Clear, factual and strengths-based report writing
Reliable and organised and able to work independently with support from our Case Coordinator
Able to travel to learners across Birmingham by your own transport or public transport
Two professional references
Suitable to work with children and young people, subject to an enhanced DBS certificate including a check of the children's barred list
Desirable:
QTS or an equivalent teaching qualification
Experience in EOTAS, alternative provision or reintegration
Experience with autism, PDA, ADHD or trauma-informed practice
Makaton or AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) experience
Experience contributing to EHCPs (Education, Health and Care Plans)
