General Teaching Assistant

Location: Hightown, Merseyside
Contract: Full-time, long-term supply (Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 3:30pm, term-time)
Pay: £110 per day
Start Date: September 2026

An established secondary school in Hightown, Merseyside , is seeking a motivated and supportive General Teaching Assistant to join their team from September on a long-term basis.

This role offers an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working with young people and is passionate about helping them overcome barriers to learning. You will work alongside classroom teachers and other members of the school team, providing practical, academic and pastoral support to pupils throughout the school day.

The successful candidate will help pupils stay engaged with their education, develop greater independence and build the confidence they need to succeed. You will be expected to adapt your approach to suit different pupils and provide encouragement, reassurance and guidance where needed.

The Role

As a General Teaching Assistant, your day-to-day responsibilities may include:

  • Working alongside teachers to support effective learning within the classroom

  • Providing additional assistance to individual pupils and small groups

  • Helping students understand instructions, complete activities and stay focused on their work

  • Supporting literacy, numeracy and other areas of the curriculum where appropriate

  • Encouraging pupils to take greater responsibility for their learning and organisation

  • Providing positive encouragement and helping pupils develop confidence

  • Supporting teachers with the preparation of learning materials and classroom resources

  • Helping promote positive behaviour and a respectful classroom atmosphere

  • Providing supervision and support during break and lunchtime when required

  • Communicating effectively with teaching, pastoral and support staff

  • Contributing to a safe, inclusive and positive school environment

  • Following safeguarding procedures and school policies at all times

About You

The school is looking for someone who is approachable, dependable and genuinely enjoys working with young people.

You will ideally:

  • Have previous experience working with children or young people

  • Have experience within a school, college, youth or educational environment, although this is not essential

  • Be able to establish positive relationships with pupils of different abilities and backgrounds

  • Have a patient and encouraging approach

  • Be confident working with individuals, small groups and larger classroom settings

  • Be able to remain calm and professional when faced with challenging situations

  • Have good communication and listening skills

  • Be flexible and willing to assist wherever needed across the school

  • Be reliable, punctual and committed to supporting pupils consistently

  • Have the right to work in the UK and be available Monday to Friday

  • Hold a Level 2 or Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning qualification (desirable)

  • Have previous secondary school experience (desirable)
