Paramedic

Job summary
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Paramedic to join our multidisciplinary team at Buxted, East Hoathly and Manor Oak Surgeries. This role offers the opportunity to work autonomously within primary care, delivering high-quality, patient-centred care to a diverse population. The post-holder will use advanced clinical assessment and decision-making skills to manage a range of acute presentations, including minor illness and injury, while supporting same-day access and home visiting services. Working within their scope of practice, they will assess, treat, refer, and signpost patients as appropriate. As a key member of the team, the Paramedic will collaborate with GPs and other healthcare professionals to provide safe, coordinated care, while promoting self-management and supporting ongoing service development.

Main duties of the job
The post-holder will deliver high-quality clinical care through assessment, diagnosis and management of patients presenting with acute and urgent conditions, including same-day requests and home visits. They will undertake clinical procedures such as ECGs, blood sampling and other investigations within their scope of practice. The role includes making appropriate referrals, prescribing where qualified, and ensuring accurate and timely clinical record-keeping. The Paramedic will also support health promotion and patient self-management by providing advice and signposting to relevant services. In addition, the post-holder will contribute to clinical governance, service development and quality improvement, while working collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team and participating in ongoing training and professional development.

Job responsibilities
The following are the core responsibilities of the Paramedic delivering health services.

• a. Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team -MDT- within the organisation
• b. Assess and triage patients, including same day triage, and as appropriate provide definitive treatment, including prescribing medications following policy, patient group directives, NICE national and local clinical guidelines and local care pathways, or make necessary referrals to other members of the primary care team
• c. Advise patients on general healthcare and promote self-management where appropriate, including signposting patients to the social prescribing service and, where appropriate, other community or voluntary services
• d. Be able to: Perform specialist health checks and reviews within their scope of practice and in line with local and national guidance. Perform and interpret ECGs. Perform investigatory procedures as required and undertake the collection of pathological specimens including intravenous blood samples, swabs and other samples within their scope of practice and within line of local and national guidance
• e. Support the delivery of anticipatory care plans and lead certain services, e.g., monitoring blood pressure and diabetes risk of elderly patients
• f. Provide an alternative model to urgent and same day GP home visit for the network
• g. Communicate at all levels across organisations ensuring that an effective, person-centred service is delivered
• h. Communicate proactively and effectively with all colleagues across the MDT, attending and contributing to meetings as required
• i. Maintain accurate and contemporaneous health records appropriate to the consultation, ensuring accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient healthcare and registration with the organisation
• j. Communicate effectively with patients and, when appropriate, family members and their carers, where applicable, complex and sensitive information regarding their physical health needs, results, findings and treatment choices
• k. Receive referrals and directed patients from triage services and other clinicians
• l. Maintain accurate clinical records in conjunction with extant legislation
• m. Develop yourself and the role through participation in clinical supervision, training and service redesign activities
• n. Actively signpost patients to the correct healthcare professional
• o. Review the latest guidance, ensuring the organisation conforms to NICE, CQC etc.
• p. Be aware of duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on safeguarding adults and safeguarding children
• q. Support in the delivery of enhanced services and other service requirements on behalf of the organisation
• r. Participate in the management of patient complaints when requested to do so, and participate in the identification of any necessary learning brought about through clinical incidents and near-miss events
• s. Undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes
• t. Contribute to and embrace the spectrum of clinical governance
• u. Attend a formal appraisal with your manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed
• v. Contribute to public health campaigns, e.g., flu clinics, through advice or direct care
• w. Maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area at all time

There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks, this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels.

• a. Support the delivery of QOF, incentive schemes, QIPP and other quality or cost effectiveness initiatives
• b. Deliver training, mentoring and guidance to other clinicians and staff on medical emergencies
• c. Support virtual and remote models of consultation and support, including e-consultations
• d. Undertake any tasks consistent with the level of the post and the scope of the role, ensuring that work is delivered in a timely and effective manner

Qualifications
Essential

• Educated to degree level in paramedicine or equivalent experience.
• Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Paramedic
• Is working towards developing Masters level 7 or equivalent capability in paramedic areas of practice and has completed and been signed off formally within the clinical pillar competencies of the NHS E Paramedic FCP/AP Roadmap to practice

Clinical knowledge and skills
Essential

• Ability to communicate complex and sensitive information effectively with people by telephone, email and face to face
• Excellent interpersonal, influencing, negotiation and organisational skills with the ability to constructively challenge the views and practices of managers and clinicians
