Role Overview

As a Floor Layer, you will be responsible for installing, repairing and maintaining a range of floor coverings within residential properties. This role is essential to maintaining safe, clean and comfortable homes for our residents.

You will work across a variety of flooring types, including carpet, vinyl, laminate, tiles and cap and cove vinyl flooring, ensuring all work is completed to a high standard and within agreed timescales.

Responsibilities

• Lay and install various types of flooring materials, including carpet, vinyl, tiles, linoleum and laminate, in accordance with project requirements.
• Install cap and cove vinyl flooring, accurately measuring, cutting and fitting materials to achieve a neat and durable finish.
• Prepare walls and floor surfaces for cap and cove installation, ensuring surfaces are clean, smooth, level and suitable for application.
• Install and form coved vinyl upstands, ensuring correct heights, angles and detailing around corners, doorways, fixtures and fittings.
• Install capping strips and coving, using appropriate adhesives and installation techniques to ensure a secure and long-lasting finish.
• Accurately cut and shape flooring around toilets, pipework, door frames, skirting, thresholds and other obstacles.
• Prepare flooring surfaces by cleaning, levelling and applying appropriate adhesives, underlays and levelling compounds.
• Ensure all flooring is installed securely, neatly and accurately, with a strong attention to detail.
• Carry out repairs and replacement of damaged flooring, including patching, re-sealing and replacing damaged sections.
• Carry out repairs to existing cap and cove flooring, ensuring replacement sections are neatly and effectively integrated with existing flooring.
• Use appropriate flooring tools and specialist equipment, including flooring knives, rollers and heat welders, safely and effectively.
• Conduct inspections of floors within social housing properties to identify and address potential issues, including wear and tear.
• Respond to flooring-related maintenance requests and complete repairs within agreed timeframes.
• Ensure cap and cove installations meet required quality, hygiene and safety standards, particularly within kitchens, bathrooms and other wet areas.
• Adhere to all health and safety regulations and company procedures while working on site.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries.
• Ensure work areas are kept clean, tidy and free from hazards during and after installation or repair work.
• Work alongside other tradespeople, including plumbers, electricians and painters, as part of larger refurbishment and maintenance projects.
• Assist with other maintenance tasks and property upgrades when not directly undertaking flooring works.
• Interact with residents in a professional and respectful manner, ensuring minimal disruption during flooring installations and repairs.
• Complete all required paperwork, job records and documentation accurately.

You Will Need

• Proven experience as a Floor Layer, ideally within the social housing, responsive repairs or residential property sector.
• Experience installing a range of flooring types, including carpet, vinyl, tile and laminate.
• Practical experience in cap and cove vinyl flooring installation is highly desirable.
• Knowledge and experience of floor preparation, adhesives, levelling compounds and underlays.
• Experience accurately cutting and fitting flooring around fixtures, fittings, pipework and other obstacles.
• Experience using relevant flooring tools and equipment, including heat welders where required.
• Good understanding of health and safety regulations and the ability to work safely and efficiently.
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality workmanship.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a wider team.
• Good communication and customer service skills, with the ability to interact professionally with residents.
• Relevant vocational qualification, such as an NVQ or City & Guilds in Floor Laying or a related trade, would be advantageous.
• Previous experience working within social housing or with public-sector clients would be advantageous.
• A full UK driving licence is desirable due to the mobile nature of the role.
