Pastoral Learning Mentor - Further Education College

Pay Rate: £13.00 - £15.00 per hour (dependent on experience)
We are currently recruiting on behalf of a well-established further education college in South Yorkshire for a dedicated and compassionate Pastoral Learning Mentor to join their team from September 2026.
This is a full-time, long-term opportunity ideal for an individual who is passionate about supporting young people and adults to overcome barriers to learning, improve their engagement, and achieve their personal and educational goals.
The Role:
As a Pastoral Learning Mentor, you will provide targeted pastoral and learning support to students, helping them to develop the confidence, resilience, and skills needed to succeed in education.
You will work closely with teaching staff, pastoral teams, safeguarding leads, and other support services to identify and address barriers that may be affecting a student's attendance, behaviour, wellbeing, or progress.
Students may present with a range of needs, including:
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
Anxiety and low confidence
Moderate learning difficulties
Behavioural and emotional needs
Difficulties with attendance, engagement, or motivation
Your responsibilities will include:
Providing 1:1 and small group pastoral and mentoring support
Building positive, trusting relationships with students and acting as a consistent point of support
Supporting students with attendance, punctuality, engagement, and motivation
Helping learners to identify and overcome barriers to education
Supporting students with emotional wellbeing, confidence, resilience, and self-esteem
Encouraging positive behaviour and helping students develop strategies to manage challenging situations
Supporting learners to develop independence, organisation, communication, and life skills
Monitoring student progress and identifying concerns at an early stage
Working collaboratively with teaching staff, pastoral teams, parents/carers, and external professionals where appropriate
Maintaining accurate records of pastoral interventions and student progress
Supporting safeguarding procedures and escalating concerns appropriately
Promoting a safe, inclusive, and supportive college environment
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Previous experience working with young people or adults in a pastoral, mentoring, education, youth work, or care setting
Experience supporting students with SEND, SEMH, behavioural, or emotional needs
A patient, approachable, and empathetic manner
The ability to build strong and professional relationships with students
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
A proactive approach to supporting attendance, engagement, and positive behaviour
The confidence to manage challenging situations calmly and positively
A strong understanding of safeguarding and student welfare
The ability to work effectively as part of a wider support team
Relevant qualifications in mentoring, education, youth work, counselling, care, or supporting learning are desirable but not essential
