The role

We’re looking for an experienced and passionate Safety and Compliance Engineer to join our Embedded Generation Team and play a key role in driving a positive safety culture and ensure compliance for our 8 power stations, located across the Scottish Islands.

Working alongside the operations and project teams, you’ll provide expert guidance and support, helping to ensure risks are effectively managed, governance standards are met, and everyone goes home safe every day. This is an exciting opportunity to provide direct safety and environmental support, aligned to the corporate standards of the safety management system and manage external stakeholder reporting, to ensure compliance with statutory regulations / licence conditions such as Pollution Control and Prevention (PPC), and ISO 14001.

You will

  • Work closely with Embedded Generation managers and other Occupational Safety Advisors to drive a strong safety culture, ensuring consistency, collaboration and the sharing of best practice across the business.
  • Support the Embedded Generation team by being a consistent point of contact for stakeholder engagement with regulators, manage regulatory reporting for environmental conditions within the PPC permits, and provide safety input to future projects to deliver site improvements.
  • Review existing operational, safety, regulatory and Embedded Generation procedures to align with corporate standards and complete audits to ensure compliance.
  • Support incident investigations, ensuring learnings are identified, shared and embedded across the business.
  • Support the development and review of process safety bowties and risk assessments, helping identify credible hazards, prevention and mitigation controls, and demonstrate risks are managed ALARP.

You have

  • A degree in Engineering, Safety or Environmental Management or equivalent industry experience, ideally progressing towards Chartered Engineer status or professional accreditation.
  • A sound understanding of current UK health and safety legislation and its application within a Networks business, including regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Strong communication skills and confidence engaging with a diverse range of internal and external regulatory stakeholders across teams.
  • Ideally, experience in electricity generation, utilities, or regulated infrastructure sectors, with exposure to safety-critical asset management, barrier management, or condition monitoring.
  • Practical experience contributing to risk assessments, including Bowtie, Process Hazard Reviews, HAZID, or HAZOP methodologies.

This role involves travel across various locations to support business needs. To enable you to fulfil these responsibilities, as a role requirement, the company will provide access to a vehicle for work-related travel.

The requirement will be reviewed on an ongoing basis, and if the company car policy criteria are met, there will be an opportunity to join the company car scheme. Provision of a company car or cash allowance does not form part of the contractual terms and conditions of employment for this role.

A valid driving licence is essential.
