Your Role: Software Engineer

We are seeking a hands-on Software Engineer with a strong PLC programming background to support the installation, troubleshooting, and optimisation of industrial machinery at customer sites in China and across Europe. This is a field-based role requiring regular travel (30-50% of the time), where you will act as a technical expert, resolving complex automation issues, upgrading control systems, and ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction.

The Software Engineer will report directly to the engineering manager on a day-to-day basis. As part of the engineering team the prime focus is to:

· Develop new and innovative solutions to achieve the end control goals.

· Project Ownership from concept through testing and commissioning

· Manage own workload to ensure priorities and deadlines are maintained and met

· Produce supporting documentation and procedures (including Functional Flow Chart)

· Be part of cross company project teams working with engineers from our French facility

· Use data analysis to drive projects and increase machine throughput and functionality

· Train in-house and external personnel

· Work with external suppliers

· Attend client meetings.

· Diagnose and resolve faults on PLC-controlled machinery at customer sites

· Modify, debug, and optimise PLC programs (e.g. Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Schneider)

· Perform software upgrades, retrofits, and system improvements on installed equipment

· Support commissioning and re-commissioning of machines following upgrades or repairs

· Interpret electrical schematics, control architectures, and machine documentation

· Provide technical support to customers both on-site and remotely

· Work closely with internal engineering teams to escalate and resolve complex issues

Location : Bathgate (moving to the Eurocentral (Motherwell) area in summer 2026

Your Profile

Background:

Prerequisites:

We are looking to hire a multi-skilled Software Engineer with solid experience with industrial machinery.

Educated to HNC/Degree level

Key Skills:

· Strong background in PLC control system in both ST and ladder

· Electrical, electronics or mechatronics understanding

· Faultfinding to component level using a range of test equipment.

· Competent in Microsoft suite of software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & MS Project is a preference)

· Proven experience in PLC programming and troubleshooting in an industrial environment

· Strong knowledge of one or more major PLC platforms (e.g. Siemens S7 / TIA Portal, Rockwell, Schneider)

· Experience working on automated machinery, manufacturing lines, or high-tech equipment

· Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and control system architectures

· Solid understanding of industrial communication protocols (e.g. Profinet, Ethernet/IP, Modbus)

· Willingness and ability to travel frequently (30-50% of the time, including short notice trips if required)

· Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently under pressure
