Job description

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Site Carpentry/Joinery Apprentice to start their career with us. The Apprenticeship will commence at the Multi-Skills Training Hub for the first two weeks. For the majority of the 18-month apprenticeship, they will be based from our developments in Lenton and Beeston. 

There will also be additional intensive two-week blocks of training every 8-10 weeks at the Training Hub learning all the skills and knowledge necessary to become a competent Site Carpenter/Joiner utilising a variety of tools and processes.

The Apprentice will work towards completing the Level 2 Apprenticeship standard in Carpentry/Joinery.

Carpenters and joiners are required to build and install a wide range of wood products including doors, windows, floors, walls, staircases and roof trusses. There are several trade opportunities within this field and also opportunities to specialise once experience has been gained.

Key Accountabilities

• Interpreting technical drawings & specifications and understanding how the end product fits into a house or building
• Assembling hand or mass-made joinery products, checking that the work is accurately finished, and preparing them for transport and installation on site,
• Understanding the performance and uses of different types and grades of wood and assessing and selecting the appropriate type for the job,
• Cutting, shaping and joining the material using woodworking machinery and other specialist tools and traditional techniques, and
• Working on site to fit joinery items into houses or buildings

Complete block learning, the first two week block learning focusses on site readiness and will cover;

• Health and safety
• Working safely and keeping clean as you go
• Setting out structural components
• Calculating quantities
• Manual handling
• Safe use of tools and equipment
• Awareness of environmental and health hazards
• Construct stud walling and encasement
• Measuring, cutting and positioning components
• Building Regulations awareness

Time spent on a Keepmoat site(s) to hone these skills before rejoining the training hub for further blocks of learning through out the 18 month programme covering:

• Flooring techniques
• Installation of stairs including handrails and spindles
• Installing wall and floor units
• Cladding
• External and internal door hanging
• Skirting and window boards
• Cut rafter and truss roofing including verge and eaves formation
• More complex setting out
• Component connection types and application
• Mitreing, splicing and scribing
• Safe use of cutting equipment
• Customer care
