General Practitioner- Zero Hours

Job summary
The Bank General Practitioner will provide high-quality, safe and effective primary medical services within TyneHealth's Enhanced Access Service on behalf of Primary Care Networks (PCNs) across North Tyneside.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the postholder will deliver routine general practice appointments during evenings and weekends, ensuring patients have timely access to high-quality care outside core practice opening hours in line with the NHS Enhanced Access service specification.

Main duties of the job

• Deliver face-to-face & telephone consultations as appropriate.
• Assess, diagnose, investigate and manage a wide range of acute and routine primary care presentations.
• Develop safe and effective management plans based upon current clinical evidence and national guidance.
• Prescribe medicines safely and appropriately in accordance with national and local prescribing guidance.
• Request investigations where clinically indicated.
• Refer patients appropriately to secondary care, community services or other healthcare professionals.
• Recognise and respond appropriately to medical emergencies.
• Ensure appropriate safety-netting advice is provided to all patients.
• Maintain accurate, contemporaneous electronic patient records using the clinical systems.
• Complete referrals, fit notes, prescriptions and other clinical documentation promptly.
• Participate in the management of patients with long-term conditions where appropriate.
• Support continuity of care by communicating effectively with registered GP practices.

TyneHealth was founded in 2006 and became the North Tyneside GP Federation in 2014, representing all of the practices in North Tyneside.

Together with our GP members, we deliver improved health care in the community to over 215,000 residents, by bringing care closer to patients homes.

We work in partnership with commissioners, local hospitals, the third sector and our patients to provide community based, medically-led services.

Job responsibilities

• Work scheduled Enhanced Access sessions across evenings, weekends and bank holidays as agreed.
• Deliver appointments within agreed consultation times whilst maintaining high standards of care.
• Work across multiple Enhanced Access hub locations where required.
• Support equitable access for patients registered with participating GP practices.
• Work collaboratively with administrative teams to ensure efficient patient flow.
• Escalate safeguarding, significant events and clinical concerns appropriately.
• Support service resilience by accepting additional sessions where operationally possible.

Clinical Governance

• Work within GMC Good Medical Practice standards.
• Maintain professional registration and licence to practise.
• Comply with TyneHealth clinical governance policies.
• Report incidents, near misses and patient safety concerns using TyneHealth reporting systems.
• Participate in clinical audit and quality improvement activities.
• Participate in peer review where requested.
• Maintain appropriate indemnity arrangements.
• Support learning from complaints and significant events.
• Work within local and national clinical pathways.

Communication

• Communicate effectively with patients, carers and relatives.
• Liaise professionally with GP practices, community providers, secondary care and other healthcare professionals.
• Work collaboratively with nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, physician associates, paramedics and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
• Provide clear clinical handovers where appropriate.

Information Governance

• Maintain strict patient confidentiality.
• Comply with the UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018 and Caldicott Principles.
• Follow TyneHealth Information Governance policies.
• Ensure secure use of NHS clinical systems including EMIS and SystmOne where applicable.
• Complete mandatory Information Governance training.

Person Specification
Experience
Essential

• Experience of working within a primary care setting

Qualifications
Essential

• Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
• Full registration with the General Medical Council.
• Licence to Practise.
• Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent.
• Included on the NHS England Medical Performers List.
