CBT Practitioner in schools

Job summary
Newham CAMHS are excited to be recruiting to a full time post as a Children & Young People's CBT Practitioner within the Wellbeing in Newham Schools Team. (Mental Health Support Team - MHST).

The post-holder will work within Newham CAMHS WINS providing assessments and interventions in and around local schools. The successful candidate will need to be a registered EMHP.

We are looking for confident CAMHS professionals who are keen to provide CBT evidence based interventions to children and young people within schools. You will have a demonstrable track record of providing collaborative and supportive interventions with children, young people, families, and parents/carers. The community served is multi-ethnic and culturally diverse and we welcome applicants who are skilled at working with the richness and complexity of this multicultural context.

Main duties of the job
  • Delivery of CBT based interventions for low mood and anxiety in educational settings across the borough, as per the MHST model and supporting development of the service.
  • As the post holder will be working within the community, they will establish and maintain positive relationships with professionals, agencies, charities and teams who also provide services to children and/or young people in the community.
  • Actioning the 3 core functions of an MHST: to deliver evidence-based interventions for mild-to-moderate mental health issues, support thesenior mental health lead in each school or college to introduce or develop their whole school or college approach and, give timely advise to school and college staff and liaise with external specialist services to help children and young people to get the right support and stay in education.

Essential
  • A minimum of a second-class Bachelor's degree from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard in a relevant subject e.g. psychology
  • AND a registerable professional qualification in a relevant subject (e.g. EMHP, CWP, CBT Therapy) from a UK university or overseas professional qualification of an equivalent standard
Desirable
  • o Evidence of continuous and relevant professional training and development (CPD), as appropriate with qualification period
Experience
Essential
  • Experience in working with children and young people with mild to moderate emotional and behavioural needs.
  • Experience of working with a wide range of social, emotional, behavioural and mental health needs.
  • Experience of working with families, school and other partner organisation to support young people who may be displaying behaviours that challenge.
  • Experience of delivering evidence based Parent groups and psychoeducation groups.
  • Experience of risk assessment and risk management
  • Experience, skills and flexibility to contribute to and facilitate effective working within a multi-disciplinary team setting
Desirable
  • Previous experience of working in CAMHS, education or community organisation with a focus on social emotional and mental health needs
  • Experience of working with children, young people and families in emotional crisis.
  • Experience in working in a multi-disciplinary context
  • Work in a multi-cultural setting, including working with interpreters and awareness of the impact of race and ethnicity on a CYP experience.
  • Experience of working in a specialist or alternative school or education setting
Knowledge and Skills
Essential
  • Evidence of early intervention skills and knowledge in children, young people and family mental health
  • o Ability to deliver evidence based intervention for CYP, parents/carers o Experience of delivering group interventions and psychoeducation in person and virtually
  • o Able to manage own time and Caseload o Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic computer skills: Keyboard skills, Outlook, word, excel, powerpoint, MSTeams and patient records o Good interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others.
  • o A working knowledge of Child Protection Guidelines
Desirable
  • o Ability to formulate, care plan and summarise presenting problem, intervention and progress, both within the team and to parents / carers / other professionals in writing and verbally
  • Able to work effectively across organisational boundaries
  • Ability to recognise own limits and seek support re supervision as appropriate. o The ability to empathise in a complex sensitive or emotional environment.
  • o Sensitivity to deal with distress, and aggression. o An interest in developing some area of expertise
  • Presentation/teaching skills o Able to work with younger children as well as pupils year 5 and older
  • o Experience of therapy modalities suited to children, young people and their families o A broad appreciation of the contribution of other therapeutic disciplines to a multi-agency service
  • Experience, skills and ability to liaise effectively with other agencies and professionals
  • o Knowledge of current development in children and young people's mental health and emotional wellbeing.

  • Working conditions: Occasional verbal and physical abuse; unpredictable clinical scenarios e.g. distressed young people and their families; travel in community all weathers; based on different sites on different days.
