Neuromodulation Pain Specialist Nurse - 12 month maternity cover

Neuromodulation specialist nurses work within the pain neuromodulation service. The post will primarily involve working within the pain neuromodulation team, supporting patients through the pathway from referral to implant and follow-up. The team supports patients for the surgical management of chronic pain and spasticity. There will also be some focus on research and audit as the service develops our portfolio of clinical research and data collection.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Registered Nurse to join our multidisciplinary team. The post-holder will be involved in the care of patients throughout the pathway including participation in pre-operative assessment, the peri-operative period and long-term management of patients.

The post-holder will have proven recent experience at minimum band 5 in a relevant area of practice. You will have a demonstrable interest in movement disorders/Neuroscience. We are keen to help you transition into this specialist role and our team will support you to develop the specific skills required to undertake this post. The ability to work collaboratively within the team is essential. A flexible approach to working hours is required.

Main duties of the job
Manage patient care, within the multi-disciplinary team, making referrals to specialist team members as required.

Use clinical judgement in managing emergency situations.

To initiate discharge planning, identifying potential problems, social support requirements and to enable timely discharge from hospital.

Practice high standard of communication including highly sensitive and complex information to develop and sustain partnership working with individuals, groups, communities and agencies, utilise evidence based information through a variety of communication media.

Maintain adequate patient documentation to NMC requirements for all patients seen and advice given in any practice setting and contribute to clinical activity/data collection as required.

Exercise accountability by practicing within own limitations and level of competence, identifying developmental needs and proactively addressing these with appropriate support. Appropriately define boundaries within practice.

Develop and maintain clinical skills including: neurostimulation programming, interrogation and troubleshooting following advanced training programme. Actively engage in the clinical care of patients in the in-patient and out-patient setting.

Job responsibilities
The specialist nurse will:

Act as a role model and resource in providing clinical evidence-based practice.

Work collaboratively with colleagues to develop effective documentation, pathways, protocols and guidelines for care. Demonstrate a commitment to share expertise and disseminate information.

Participate in implementing national standards and frameworks at a local level.

Provide workplace evidence in the delivery of service.

Maintain involvement and active input in multidisciplinary meetings and appropriate local bodies / forms to contribute and service development.

Contribute appropriately to clinical governance activities that relate to own area of practice and patient/client group.

Support clinical and management teams in the delivery of Trust and Directorate objectives.

Education/Training:
The specialist nurse will:

Maintain, advance and develop personal theoretical knowledge, high standards of clinical competence and professional development through ongoing self-education and attendance at relevant courses of study.

Maintain own professional portfolio.

Contribute to the teaching and support of students from the multi professional team within relevant educational programmes.

Provide an appropriate learning environment, including mentorship and coaching.

Contribute to relevant educational programmes and in house study days.
  • Identify and address the educational needs of patients, families, carers and staff involved in the delivery of this service.
  • Provide specialist nursing support, information and education for patients, families and carers who use the service.
Improving quality and developing practice:
Specialist nurses will be able to:
  • Participate in ongoing service review and evaluation, including monitoring of patient experience.
  • Participate in research / audit to generate new evidence in area of speciality.
  • Evaluate clinical practice in relation to its evidence base and clinical effectiveness.
  • Identify areas of risk and poor quality, and address these through appropriate governance structures and forums.
  • Participate and actively seek peer review in practice.
  • Have responsibility to ensure annual appraisal, agree objectives which reflect local and national service needs and develop personal development plans.
  • Develop personal and professional knowledge through critical self-appraisal, clinical supervision and networking with other health care professionals locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Advocate and contribute to a working environment that promotes continuous learning and development, evidence based practice and succession planning, as well as identifying learning opportunities at local and national levels.
  • Have a high level of communication skills to enable the participation in the dissemination of practice through conferences and professional publications.
  • Ensure statutory and mandatory training updates, as well as role /speciality updates are completed and necessary records maintained.
  • Take an active interest in clinical governance issues and service research projects.
  • Ensure compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines, data protection legislation, research governance and all other relevant legislation.
  • Contribute to the preparation and presentation of research findings. Apply critical appraisal skills in evaluating research protocols and scientific papers.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Registered nurse part 1 or 8 or 12 or 15 of register (depending on area of practice)
  • First level degree (HEI level 5 or 6) in nursing
  • Relevant specialist post-graduate qualification in Neurosciences or equivalent clinical experience
Desirable
  • Completed or completing Masters level (HEI level 7) qualification or evidence of working towards
Knowledge
Essential
  • Demonstrates up to date knowledge and extensive expertise in the speciality.
  • Knowledge of the key professional issues and NMC guidelines relating to professional practice.
Desirable
  • Experience of applying research evidence to clinical practice.
