Full Time IT Technician

We are seeking a proactive and customer-focused IT Technician to join our IT Support team. The successful applicant will be technically competent, organised, and adaptable, with a strong commitment to providing high-quality support to staff and pupils in a busy secondary school environment. They will possess excellent problem-solving skills, the ability to work calmly under pressure, and a dedication to maintaining reliable and effective IT systems that support teaching,
learning, and the wider school community.

The successful candidate will provide practical, reliable and customer-focused ICT support across Rayleigh Schools Trust, ensuring that IT equipment, classroom technology, user accounts and core systems operate effectively to support teaching, learning, safeguarding and administration. This is a hands-on, onsite support role with the successful candidate being comfortable moving between Trust sites during the working day and dealing directly with staff, students, parents, and visitors were appropriate. The post is suitable for someone who can work independently and as part of a team, follow Trust procedures, communicate clearly with non-technical users and escalate issues before they become business-critical.

Key Responsibilities

Helpdesk and User Support

• Provide first-line and basic second-line support for staff, students and parents, covering accounts, software, hardware, printing, classroom technology and general ICT issues.

• Manage helpdesk tickets, maintaining accurate records of actions taken and required follow up.

• Prioritise work according to teaching impact, safeguarding, exams and operational needs.

• Escalate complex or high-risk issues to the IT Network Manager with sufficient detail for investigation.

Devices, Hardware and Classroom Technology

• Install, configure, maintain and troubleshoot Trust ICT equipment, including PCs, laptops, tablets and peripherals.

• Support classroom technology such as interactive displays, projectors, AV equipment and associated cabling.

• Prepare and deploy devices following Trust procedures, including testing, labelling and asset updates.

• Complete initial fault diagnosis and repairs before escalation.

Software, Microsoft 365 and Educational Systems

• Support Microsoft Windows, Microsoft 365 and approved educational applications.

• Assist with account management, password support and authorised MFA resets.

• Support Trust systems including Senso, Go4Schools and other curriculum, safeguarding and administration platforms.

• Install and update approved software in line with Trust procedures, escalating licensing or supplier issues when required.

Network, Printing and Peripheral Support

• Perform basic wired and wireless network troubleshooting.

• Support printers, scanners, photocopiers and print services, resolving common connectivity and configuration issues.

• Maintain and troubleshoot peripheral devices, escalating supplier or infrastructure-related faults.

• Report recurring technical issues to the IT Network Manager.

CCTV, Access Control and Operational Systems

• Support authorised CCTV requests in accordance with Trust policy and UK GDPR requirements.

• Assist with basic Paxton access control administration and fault reporting.

• Provide first-line support for cashless catering systems and associated devices.

• Maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information.

Safeguarding, Data Protection and Security

• Monitor and escalate safeguarding alerts in line with Trust procedures.

• Assist with Subject Access Requests as directed.

• Adhere to Trust policies covering cyber security, data protection, user access and confidential information.

• Report data breaches, cyber incidents or safeguarding concerns immediately.

Exams, Events and Flexible Cover

• Provide ICT support for examinations, ensuring devices, software and access are ready when required.

• Support school events, meetings, training sessions and other Trust activities.

• Use allocated holiday working days for maintenance, system checks, stock management and improvement projects.

• Undertake training and other duties appropriate to the role as requested by the IT Network.

Scope of the Role

• First-line and basic second-line IT Technician position.

• Not responsible for network architecture, server infrastructure, firewall management, cyber security strategy, procurement strategy or Data Protection Officer functions.

• Complex or high-risk technical decisions must be referred to the IT Network Manager.

Person Specification

Essential

• GCSE English and Mathematics at Grade 4/C or above, or equivalent.

• Minimum of 2 years practical work experience in IT support or a closely related technical support environment.

• Experience supporting Microsoft Windows devices and troubleshooting common hardware, software and user access issues.

• Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications and account support tasks.

• Ability to manage a busy workload, use a helpdesk system properly and prioritise support requests based on operational impact.

• Strong practical problem-solving skills with the ability to check the basics before escalating.

• Clear communication skills and the ability to explain technical issues to non-technical users calmly and professionally.

• Willingness to work onsite across both Trust sites and carry out hands-on technical tasks as part of the normal working day.

• Ability to work independently, follow instructions, maintain confidentiality and ask for help when escalation is needed.

• Professional, reliable and organised approach, with good attention to detail when updating tickets, records and documentation.

Desirable

• Relevant IT qualification or demonstrable equivalent technical experience.

• Previous experience working in a school, academy trust or education environment.

• Experience with school systems such as Senso, Go4Schools, MIS/assessment platforms, CCTV, door access, printing or classroom AV systems.

Working Hours

37 hours per week, Monday to Friday. 40 weeks per year.

Salary

£27,254 - £28,598 per annum Full Time equivalent
£23,940 - £25,450 per annum (pro rata)
