Perioperative Diabetes Specialist Nurse

£39.96k - £48.12k per annum
Part-time
Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a nurse experienced in perioperative care to undertake a 12-month fixed-term/secondment within the Peri-Operative Diabetes Specialist Nursing Service, providing maternity leave cover. The post holder's main responsibility will be to focus on improving perioperative care for diabetes patients within St. Mary's (SMH) and Royal Eye hospital (REH).

The ideal candidate will have experience of working on a surgical ward and have a good understanding of the issues faced by patients with diabetes who are undergoing elective and emergency surgery. As well as delivering support to patients during their perioperative journey, the role will also involve an educational element with a focus on disseminating knowledge around perioperative diabetes care to colleagues across SMH and REH.

The Inpatient diabetes team is part of a larger diabetes team, which is led by the Diabetes ACP and consists of diabetes specialist nurses, highly specialised pharmacist, dietitians and consultants based in the Diabetes, Endocrinology, Metabolism centre in Peter Mount Building, at Manchester Royal Infirmary. The service delivers diabetes care across both the acute hospital, outpatient and community settings. We work closely with consultants, community nurses, GP's and practice nurses as well as the antenatal services. We provide specialist support and advise to people with all types of diabetes. This includes a busy insulin pump service and antenatal support.

Main duties of the job
We require an experienced, motivated, dynamic nurse to join a friendly team of diabetes professionals in our Diabetes service. Effective communication skills are essential and being able to work both within a team environment and independently; organising and prioritising individual workload is crucial to this role. Experience managing diabetes care is essential as is a willingness to learn new skills appropriate to the post.

The post will be suitable for nurses working within a diabetes specialist area or with diabetes patients who may want to expand their skills but would also be suitable for an experienced nurse who can demonstrate a strong interest in diabetes and is willing to develop their skills and knowledge in diabetes care.

The post holder must be able to demonstrate excellent clinical, communication and interpersonal skills in order to maintain the excellent standards of diabetes care our patients expect.

The role requires this professional to work within a variety of settings of inpatient and outpatient settings, and be able to provide on-site weekend cover, on a rotational basis.
