University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust is seeking an ambitious and motivated Lead Pharmacy Technician - Homecare or Specialist Pharmacist - Homecare to take on a pivotal role in the operational management, governance, development and future direction of our Homecare Medicines Service.

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled pharmacy professional with expertise in homecare medicines, procurement, medicines optimisation and service improvement. You will lead a dedicated team, work closely with pharmacists, clinicians, finance teams and external providers, and play a key role in ensuring that patients receive safe, effective and high-quality care through our homecare services.

Main duties of the job

What you'll do
  • Lead the operational management and development of Homecare Medicines Services.
  • Provide professional leadership for all pharmacy homecare activities.
  • Manage relationships with homecare providers, clinical teams and external stakeholders.
  • Lead service improvement, digital transformation and quality initiatives.
  • Ensure robust governance, contract compliance and financial oversight.
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators across operational, clinical, safety and financial domains.
  • Support the implementation of new homecare services and innovative treatment pathways.
  • Represent University Hospitals Plymouth at regional and national homecare forums.

  • A registered Pharmacy Technician with the GPhC.
  • An Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACT).
  • Experienced in hospital pharmacy practice and homecare medicines management.
  • A confident leader with experience of managing and developing staff.
  • Passionate about service improvement, patient safety and delivering high-quality care.
  • Able to build strong relationships and influence change across multidisciplinary teams.

Job responsibilities

This is an exciting leadership opportunity for an experienced Pharmacy Technician to lead the operational management, governance and strategic development of Homecare Medicines Services across University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust.

The postholder will be responsible for ensuring the safe, effective and sustainable delivery of all homecare medicines used within the Trust, working closely with pharmacy, clinical, procurement, finance and operational colleagues. As the Trust's lead for homecare medicines, you will oversee existing services, support the introduction of new therapies and treatment pathways, and ensure compliance with national standards, contractual requirements and best practice guidance.

You will play a key role in delivering high-quality patient care by ensuring medicines are supplied safely and efficiently through homecare providers, while also maximising financial value and supporting medicines optimisation initiatives across the organisation.

As a senior member of the Pharmacy team, you will provide professional and operational leadership to the Homecare team, develop staff, drive improvement projects and represent the Trust at regional and national homecare networks.

Main Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:
  • Leading the delivery, development and continuous improvement of Homecare Medicines Services across the Trust.
  • Managing and developing a team of pharmacy staff to ensure safe, efficient and patient-focused service delivery.
  • Acting as the Trust's professional lead for homecare medicines, providing specialist advice and guidance to pharmacy and clinical teams.
  • Developing new homecare services and treatment pathways, ensuring appropriate governance, financial and contractual arrangements are in place before implementation.
  • Working collaboratively with consultants, pharmacists, nursing teams, procurement colleagues and homecare providers to improve patient outcomes and service performance.
  • Monitoring and managing homecare contracts, service level agreements and provider performance to ensure quality, compliance and value for money.
  • Leading on financial oversight of homecare medicines, including invoice reconciliation, contract pricing validation and budget management.
  • Establishing and monitoring key performance indicators covering operational, clinical, financial and patient safety measures.
  • Leading investigations into incidents, complaints and service deviations, implementing improvements to enhance quality and patient experience.
  • Ensuring all homecare services comply with Royal Pharmaceutical Society standards, National Homecare Medicines Committee guidance and relevant NHS policies.
  • Driving digital transformation and innovation within homecare services, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and patient care.
  • Leading quality improvement, audit and service evaluation projects to support ongoing service development.
  • Supporting education and training across the Pharmacy Department to improve understanding and governance of homecare medicines.
  • Representing the Trust at regional and national meetings, contributing to the wider development of homecare services.
Person Specification

Knowledge & Experience
Essential
  • Demonstrable specialist knowledge and experience in Homecare.
  • Excellent working knowledge of current legislation, Department of Health guidelines and National Homecare Medicines Committee guidance concerning homecare services.
Desirable
  • Proven knowledge of financial / operational procedures and budget management
Qualifications
Essential
  • City & Guilds BTEC or NVQ level 3 in pharmacy services OR MPharm
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Mandatory CPD to maintain fitness to practice
Desirable
  • Further clinical, research, leadership or management qualifications
Aptitude & Abilities
Essential
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal, with proven ability to demonstrate fluency, clarity and effectiveness at all levels.
  • Can prioritise workload and meet deadlines
