MycoFibres Process, Controls & Automation Engineer

About the role

MycoVentures is looking for a practical and ambitious MycoFibres Process, Controls & Automation Engineer to join our growing engineering team. The role will involve developing, instrumenting, automating and commissioning new equipment and engineering systems, taking projects from early prototype through testing and into reliable, repeatable operation.

This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys both understanding how a process works and building the controls, instrumentation and automation needed to make it work consistently.

What you will do

• Develop and assemble control and instrumentation systems for prototype and production equipment.
• Integrate sensors, actuators, pumps, valves, motors and embedded or PLC-based control systems.
• Support process development, equipment trials, troubleshooting and commissioning.
• Develop data-acquisition, monitoring and equipment-automation solutions.
• Prepare electrical schematics, P&ID inputs, wiring information, bills of materials and technical documentation.
• Work closely with mechanical, process and scientific colleagues on multidisciplinary engineering projects.
• Improve equipment reliability, repeatability, maintainability and operator usability.
• Coordinate with specialist external electrical, fabrication and engineering contractors where required.

Who we would like to hear from

We welcome applications from graduates and early-career engineers, typically with 2–3 years of experience, from a range of backgrounds including:

• Process or Chemical Engineering
• Controls & Instrumentation Engineering
• Mechatronics Engineering
• Electrical / Electronic Engineering
• Automation or Robotics
• Brewing, distilling, food-processing or other process-manufacturing environments with strong controls / instrumentation experience

We are more interested in practical capability and engineering judgement than in a specific degree title.

A candidate with process-industry experience who has developed strong hands-on capability in controls, instrumentation, electronics or automation would be particularly relevant.

Useful experience

Experience with some of the following would be useful, but we do not expect candidates to have all of them:

• PLCs, embedded controllers or microcontrollers
• Industrial sensors, instrumentation and data acquisition
• Analogue and digital I/O, including common industrial signal standards
• Pump, valve, motor, actuator or pneumatic control
• Batch-process sequencing, PID control or process automation
• Electrical schematics, P&IDs and CAD
• Python or another programming language
• Industrial communications and local data-logging systems
• Building, modifying, commissioning or troubleshooting practical process equipment

The person

We are looking for someone who likes being in a workshop, laboratory or process environment as much as being behind a computer. You should be comfortable working across engineering disciplines, systematically troubleshooting prototypes and taking responsibility for turning ideas into working systems. Practical university projects, Formula Student, robotics, personal builds, brewery / distillery improvement projects, industrial automation work or other hands-on engineering experience are particularly relevant.

Development opportunity

The role offers exposure to a broad range of engineering disciplines and the opportunity to take increasing technical ownership as the company grows. It is intended to develop with the successful candidate rather than remain a narrowly defined maintenance or programming position.

Location & working pattern

Aberdeen / Aberdeenshire

The role is predominantly site-based because of the practical nature of the engineering work, with flexibility for suitable design and software activities where appropriate.

International

The position may involve international travel of up to approximately 35%, including potential project work in Europe, Australia, Brazil and Africa, particularly as MycoVentures establishes and commissions new operational sites.
